We actually start about 4500, and work our way East and Up. A few County Roads, about 6000 turns to gravel, then to 4WD about 7000, from there up ruts.
We seldom, if ever, see anyone past 6500, no cell service. Most everybody has an aversion to hiking a couple miles out to call a tow truck. Mt Borah is past 12000 (iirc), and might be some snow on the ground most of the year.
Fish & Game used to say there were no Grizzly Bear in Idaho, but we have had them within 100 yds of the truck once or twice. I brought my 458 RUM after the first up close sighting. Things that might consider me and the Nephew on the menu make me nervous outside the RAM.
Good News; I am approved for surgery and the Dr thinks full recovery. Some lingering pain, but I'm 75+, and I made 193 parachute jumps in the Rangers. My Grandfather told me once around his 75th Birthday. "When you get to be my age, half your "stuff" won't work any more; and the rest will hurt most of the time".
Danged if He wasn't right!
