Isolation Worries

Took my Short-hair out to do his business yesterday and my neighbor was walking his French Bulldog out on the road. He stopped, asked how my wife and I were doing and made sure he had my cell phone number in case he needed to call me. His big concern was looters! We live about 5 miles from the nearest towns and calling 911 results in at least a 45 minute delay. I assured him that if he needed help I would respond, since he doesn't own a firearm. His house is under 200 yards away and from my upstairs window I can cover about 2/3 of his property...if really needed. He knows I'm more than well equipped with firearms.
My point is this: He is a little odd, but not one to panic under normal situations. He bought a hog from one of the neighbors down the road to process and be stocked up. I was offered half if I wanted it. The thing is, when I was in our local Walmart on Wednesday, the produce area was well stocked, meat was in good shape , bakery was low on some brands but otherwise full, milk and dairy - full, most canned goods plentiful and there was plenty of coffee, tea and etc. products. The shortages were in any paper products, cleaning products, hand sanitizers, hydrogen peroxide, dry foods like beans, rice, pasta and etc., certain cereal brands and oatmeal. Frozen was in good shape other than no pizzas, fries, burritos or most any fast-meal types.
We are indeed in a serious situation with this damned virus, but I fear that far too many are panicking about the wrong thing. Maybe too many "Zombie apocalypse" type movies and TV shows. I'm not one to trust other people all that much, but my neighbor's fears concern me. I always have loaded firearms around, but I always have had, simply because of the response time of 911 and our relatively remote location. I'm not paranoid, but neither am I stupid. I am more concerned about people spreading this virus through their own selfish actions than hordes descending on us for food or toilet paper. I know there are a lot of people who resent the government restrictions, citing "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" type thing, but if you notice "life" comes first in that equation. Kind of hard to have the rest without it.

DON"T loan him a gun! If he does anything with it, intended or accidental, you are responsible to some degree.

I'm pretty sure any consequences for transferring a gun to someone legally able to own one will be significantly less than if one was to shoot a prowler, 200 yards away, on someone else's property.

While protecting one's neighbor's property seems laudable on the surface, remember, he has the same right, and opportunity to purchase a firearm as you do.
And you, not him will be the one mortgaging their home to hire a lawyer to keep you out of jail.

But as always:
Remember what you paid for this advice,
and
IANAL.

We all need to find the common ground. If your neighbor is that concerned about his safety he needs to take on some personal responsibility. Sure we all will help our neighbors. JMHO

Actually, the remark about 200 yards was a poor attempt at a joke, but your comment is right on the money.
As to the remarks about loaning him a gun; he doesn't have an FOID card, so that would make both of us felons.
No, best I can do is offer support, but I really don't think it will ever really come to that.

If you're going to reply to my post please take the time to at least read it.
I said nothing about selling a gun, only loaning one,
I also said nothing about shooting a prowler 200 yards away.

I almost hate to ask, but I will.
What is a FIOD card?

I did spend the necessary about of time to read your post, and was including information from the original post in my remarks.

To your point about loaning vs selling: both are transfers. There is no distinction in law between loaning and selling a firearm: Possession is ownership in the eyes of the law....

I'm guessing your in Illinois; how hard is it for a resident to get a FOID card?

Good luck

Really not that hard if you have a good record. But it can take months for all investigations to be completed in good times. Hard to say these days. Here in Illinois you need one to even have ammunition or a firearm in your possession, let alone purchase one.

We are in uncharted waters. The only known effective way, at this point, to combat the spread of the virus is by isolation so it difficult to find fault with the government "stay at home orders" even as distasteful as they may be.

As for a looters, if that does happen, most likely it will be by roving gangs heavily armed and organized but we are a long way from that, at least I hope so. Coming to the aid of your neighbor is a noble idea but impractical for it would mean exposing yourself and by extension your family to a potentially superior deadly foe. However if you hold a defensive position and demonstrate determined resistance they most likely would move on to easier pickings. Thus be careful making promises that you may not be able to keep but like I said, hopefully this will never happen.

Most of the gun control advocates who have thought past the end of their nose (probably less than half) assume the govmt will always be there to protect them. At the first empty toilet paper shelf in the grocery store they started worrying about the government collapse and running to buy a gun. This neighbor has clearly started worrying that the situation could degrade well beyond what he is prepared for.
