Is tumbling brass used in a

super accurate varmint rifle a bad thing? What do the BR guys do to clean their brass??

Thanks
Dave

I do 'em by hand, using either a Krazy Kloth,I get mine from Russ Haydon) or Never Dull,Canadian Tire) and then wipe 'em off with a clean rag. In the old days, we used 0000 steel wool but that does reduce the thickness of the brass over time, a very long time that is :D The cheapest is Never Dull, a $5 can lasts a life time!

BMX,
I am probably the only person on this board that still uses a tumbler, everyone has gone to ultra-sound method that Jason is experimenting with. I still use a Midway tumbler and will for a while,I have 15lbs.of corncob media left)

I always tumble my brass before sizing never after sizing,I an afraid I will ding up the case necks. Just as a thought, it's not a bad ides to wipe your brass off with a rag before you run them in your sizing die to be sure no media left on them. It might screw up the surface of your die.

This does not have to be mentioned I know, but do NOT tumble loaded ammo.
Good Luck

Chuck

I tumble pistol brass, not rifle brass. I keep a little spritzer container with MPro7 in my range kit. The necks get wiped off before I leave the range.

I used Ballistol to lubricate my 6BR cases for FL sizing. It is a good cleaner as well as an excellent lubricant.,It's also non-toxic and biodegradeable). I wipe the case off with a paper towel with a little Ballistol on it, then apply a little more Ballistol with my fingertips. After sizing, normal handling during the remainder of the reloading process is enough to remove the lube.

Vibrating case cleaner with corncob media, purchased dry) and a bit of IOSSO creamy cleaner as soon as I return from the range. I'll run a load of 40-60 cases about an hour or so. I lube cases on RCBS pad with RCBS lube, which is water soluable. I do not clean nor lube the inside of the case necks, yet. I may start cleaning but not lubing them. I use a bushing resizing die without the neck resizing button on the shaft. After reloading, I wipe the outside with a damp towel which removes all the resizing lube and makes me feel real good. Lubricant on the outside of a case during firing in a gun can be a very bad thing. Like a shipwreck at sea, it can ruin your whole day. Keep chambers and cases clean and dry.

I just brush them out with a stiff nylon RCBS neck brush. I don't put any ballistol on there because I don't want to leave any residue that might make some bullets more slippery than others. I seat with a K&M arbor with bullet-seating force gauge. If the bullet-seating force is pretty constant across a set of bullets, they almost always will shoot round groups with a low ES. What I DID find is that very small variances in the chamfer on the neck mouth will affect the initial force required to seat quite dramatically. For this reason I stopped using a VLD style chamferer, now I just use a plain jane Forster tool. I just couldn't control the depth of chamfer satisfactorily with the deep-angle chamferer. I haven't tried the 28-degree Holland tool though. I looks like it might be a good compromise.

Paul,

I have the Lyman 22 degree chamfering tool and like it a lot. Lock Stock and barrel has them for about eight bucks.
