Is This The Best Scope

I shoot targets primarily at 100-200 yards with my Savage 12LRPV. I have a Bushnell 4200 6-24 scope which works well but I am wanting to get closer to the target. My eyes are not what they used to be.
Anyway, I am ready to upgrade and have narrowed it down to the Nightforce Benchrest 12-42 X 56 scope. This is the absolute top of my budget but I am willing to spend the bucks if the quality I have read about is true.
Is there a better direction to go? Would this be a waste of money based on my limited shooting distance?

Buy once cry once. After you buy one you will wonder why you didn't get one sooner. I use mine to shoot from 100 yds to 2 miles and I am very happy. A friend has a March and the added power,10-60x)is nice but I'm not sure its 2x as nice. Buy it and you'll be glad you did.

Maybe, but if it's what you want and you have the means, satisfy your itch. If you regret it later, the resale value will hold.
Only problem with 42x is you heartbeat, if you're not locked into a vise.

I have a Sightron III 30mm 8 X 32 target scope. i like it better than my nightforce. Three reasons, less expensive, clearer, and tracks just as good or better. I am just waiting for the new Sightron 30mm 10 x 50s. Saw a prototype and was very impressed. I encourage all interested to call them and prompt them for a delivery date.

The problem with getting 'closer' to the target is the mirage becomes more evident, and therefore may be worse than what you are experiencing now.
The best BR shooters use the mirage to their advantage and welcome the trade-off in clarity and learn when to shoot when the image is dancing around.
If your shooting paper only, I would experiment with various target formats that may allow you to get tighter groups.

The March sounds like the ultimate but is way out of my budget. The Sightron has drawn my interest now based on the good reviews. So now my question is does the NightForce merit the extra cost over the Sightron?

I like my 12-42 br nightforce over the sightron at 600-1000+ yards. The sightron is nice I've shot it out to 1000 yards it is clear,tracks well,and is less expensive then the n.f. but it's no n.f. The n.f. has it beat except on price, and resale value on the n.f. is better. If all your shooting is at shorter range go with the sightron and if you decide to stretch it out it will to the job. I know some people see it differently but that's my opinion being able to put them side by side at 1000 yards. The extra magnification and choice of reticules are worth the difference in cost, but I've said it before to each his own. Hope this helps.

sightron glass is a tad better than nightforce. if your rolling around in the sand and mud and using your scope for a hammer then you might need a nightforce but if your not doing what i said above then you better buy a sightron. sightron is the absolute best high mag scope on the planet for the less than $1000 range.the bushy 4200 and 6500 are good bang for buck also.

I have a Sightron SIII 6x24 and although it is great glass and I highly recommend it .....It is NOT better glass than my NF's!
But as we all know good glass is in the eye of the beholder. Kenny

I'll second on what Rusty said, we have a guy at the range with a Nightforce 8x32 and I have a Sightron SIII 8x32x56 and a few shooters have looked thru both and the SIII is clearer on the edges and crisper color and sharpness go in favor of the SIII
I just got my second one 2 weeks ago good scope and value.

I agree to buy the Sightron. It's alot less expensive and alomst as good if not as good. The main difference between the two is a little less magnification with the Sightron, but you're only shooting 200 yards so it shouldnt matter. Plus it is still plenty good enough to use for 1000 yard shots if the chance arises.

Currently, at $565, the Burris Signature Select 6-24x44mm is my recommendation. I only shoot at 20x, but clarity is golden at 24x. I wish I could afford a $20,000 scope, but with my steadiness it would be a waste of money. I've tried, and bought, several lesser scopes. None equaled the Burris Signature Select. cliffy

If you like your 4200 6-24 but just want more mag, I'd try the 4200 8-32 before dropping the large coin on a nightforce or sightron sIII.

That might work but I think I want a little higher quality glass - also a little more light at longer mag.
I think this is the same principal as racing cars. You build the 180 mile per hour car for $200,000 and each mile per hour after that costs exponentially more.
One of my biggest problems is that none of the local gun dealers stock high end target scopes so I can't even look at one before I buy. I have to go by reputation and opinions from you guys.

There is another option, I own the Bush 6500 4.5x30x50. I love the scope I just added a 4x booster and now I can see individual pine needles at 500yds. I compared it side by side with the NF 42xBR with a 3x booster and a Zeiss 24x Victory with a 4x. It did not give up much to either and it costs a lot less! Another pluss for the 6500 is its size. Its a lot smaller and lighter than the NF and again about $500 less..
I can see 6mm bullet holes on paper at 300yds without the booster and the eye relief is great.

Well, I have decided on the Sightron 8-32 X 56 due to all the good reviews and slightly lower price than the Nightforce. Now my question is - What rings, mount etc. would be the best for my Savage 12LRPV bolt single shot? Since I am spending this much on the scope I want a comparable mounting system.
