Is this barrel worth rechambering?

Hi Folks,

I've been offered a 29.25" bartlien barrel chambered in 6.5x47 that has had 700 rounds of f-class shooting through it.

I'm a little budget minded at present and can't afford a new barrel, but need a good shooter for 300-500 yard club level shooting.

Could I expect decent accuracy and barrel life if I had 3-4 inches removed from this barrel and a new crown to get a finish length of 25-26"? It is a good shooter in its current state, but won't fit my action and I assume by taking a few inches, rather than just half a chamber I should be in good rifling and get a decent shooter, but I have little experience rechambering barrels.

The new chambering will be 260AI shooting 123gr scenar.

Cheers,

You've been asked two very pertinent questions about what's left of the barrel
and cost of the barrel.

Will there be a gunsmithing cost and reamer cost ?

My experience has shown that the second throat typically won't last as long
as the original throat and a third throat won't last as long as the second.

Sometimes a free barrel is no bargain if you have to pay to get the work
done.

No obvious answers here. Good luck in getting a good barrel.

Depends on purchase price. Enough there to cut off and rechamber. Most wear is in the throat.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen.

I don't have a borescope, so that is out of the question. As for the cost of it, by the time it is fitted it would owe me about half what a new barrel would.

I guess what I am wondering is if there is any reason that rechambering the barrel that is probably only halfway through its accurate life and taking a few inches off won't result in an accurate rifle? A diminished barrel life I can live with, a bad shooting barrel I cannot.

Thanks again

The answers to this are just opinions. Some very experienced shooters will tell you to give it a try, others will tell you don’t bother. It’s a crap shoot. If I had to pay 300 to chamber it and I got the barrel free I wouldn’t do it. Remember you need enough 1.25” diameter length to be able to cut the chamber off and a little more off to be able to completely cut off the old chamber.

You say budget minded ? Been there with 260 AI . Nothing Budget when I did one ?

With approximately a third to half of the barrel life gone already I think half the cost is not a great value. If you got the barrel for free it would probably be a good value to pay for the chambering. If you were doing your own work it would be another story.

I view barrels in the same light as tires on a race car, they are disposable items. If you can't look at the bore and know what you are looking at, save your pennies and buy a new barrel. There are several barrel makers that make perfectly good tubes at a lower price point than the top name brands out there. As always, this advice is worth what you paid for it. ;)
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Set it back, rechamber and recrown it, and you should be good to go. I have done it many times.

You have a decision to make . Drive on recapped tires and say a prayer or save for new and have faith in long life . It's an analogy of course .

If the barrel was accurate, setting it back will bring it back to it's original state.

It should give him an extra 1,000 to possibly 1,500 rounds on the barrel. I have done it several times on barrels that were sub MOA, and regained my original results.

If you can do the work yourself , it may be worth your time and original cost of the used barrel . If you need to pay someone to do the work it's not worth it . Just my $.02 . Coffee time
