is this a NEW bolt face ?

this is the bolt face on my new savage 300 wsm.
i bought this last year and because of my move, i never shot it.
loaded 5 rounds to sight in and decided best to start with a known
clean bore.
it took me all day to clean the copper out of the bore
i go to clean and lube the bolt and this is what the face looks like.
it was dirty, no brass but lots of carbon/black stuff.

talk to me about the bolt face.

Looks way too soft like a primer has gouged it. And the rust- got some weird stuff goin on there. Did you blow some primers? Usually that causes pits. Ive never seen gouges like that

is that a primer that failed(the round burn dot marks) and had a flame follow
the radius of the primer/primer pocket and more burn ???

I know this is just a reach but since you said "new" and that you had only put 5 rounds thru the barrel, it appears that it failed the proof test....BADLY.....or it ain't new as advertised, but badly abused. Referring to all the copper fouling. Just my opinion.

gentlemen,
fine reading and you will notice i said i loaded 5 rounds to sight in with, but decided to start with a clean bore.
I HAVE NOT FIRED THIS RIFLE
it is "new" from CDNN

Could that have been someones bushing job that was soldered in and they were not happy and decided to swap it out with a new rifle bolt head?

Definitely not new. I own a number of Savages with quite a few rounds on them and none look anything like this. Plus the amount of copper in the bore you described. Probably a customer returned it and the store wasn't savvy enough to tell it had been used.

You bought a used gun. The Savage warranty is good for one year from date of purchase to the original owner, with proof of purchase.

Did you fill out and send in the warranty card? This is something you'll have to take up with Cabela's.

savage took one look at the pic of the bolt face and said, well agreed to, take the whole rifle back for inspection. the very least replace the bolt head, but i think when they look at the bbl i will get a new bbl too.

Right:rolleyes: they can clearly see it isn't a manufacturing defect.
