is this a logical way to decide???

What cartridge/rifle to buy/make

Is it logical to pick a projectile and a speed you want it to go and then go looking for a cartridge that will do those figures??

EG a .224 75 V-max at 3000 FPS is what I want to achieve

Whats the most efficient cartridge to do those numbers??

how do you guys go working back wards from a result to get the method to achieve the result??

thanks

I'm a little new to the game, but I look at loading manuals to see what results have been seen from them to start with. Looks to me like a 22 br rem would come close and it is certainly an efficient cartidge.

You can use QuickLoad reloading software, or leaf through any reloading manual, to get an idea of common cartridges producing desired numbers.

Then you research a little to decide on one cartridge.
One of the best ways to do that is simply to 'search' shooting forums like this.

Just look through the cartidge infoe pages on this site too. After a quick look it seems the 223 is just a little short and the 223AI is there.

Theres nothing wrong with figuring out exactly what you want to shoot and then figuring out how to do it. thats generally what i try to do.

As for a case the 223AI will do it,quickload says about 3050ish at max pressures)but i would probably go with the 22BR just because the efficiency of the case itself and you can do it at much lower pressures if you want

22BR again would sure do the trick or real close. I personally are looking for a Little more in that class of bullet so as we speak I have a 22 Dasher being chambered.

I think building a rifle around a bullet is a valid way to achieve your objective.

And I think you'd be well served by a .223 AI.

my first question was how you came up with a 75g A max at 3000 fps, your application, and what you are trying to achieve, targets or live game, shooting plates at 1000 yds????

I took an easily obtainable projectile, over here) with a BC over 0.4 that the manufacturer says can be used for hunting as well as target work.
and picked a velocity figure out of the air

Primary aim/use of rifle Harvesting and pest control out to 400 yards
secondary- paper punching/ plate playing to 600 yards

hit as hard as possible with using less than 30 grain powder

in an easy to get or form case

total rifle weight inc scope 10-10.5 lbs repeater- hopefully with 5 round or greater detachable magazine system and a fluted 26 inch barrel,or longer if Ican squeze it under the weight limit)

able to group day in day out- be a working rifle first- not a safe queen

ammo loadable on a Dillon 550 to give same accuracy as the single stage press ammo

that about all the things I thought about at the time of writing the question
some of my thoughts weren't relavent to the question

heres my thought process- pull it apart for it's holes and weakness please

thanks

If 6mm bullets are available I'd go with the 6br. It'll run a 105 grain bullet just shy of that number but would be great for you work at 600 with less wind drift. Also, in the right range on powder charge. Not sure about the detachable magazine though. I'm pretty sure it can be done but I'm not going to make a statement I"m not sure about.
