Is there a proper way to put a rifled action back in its stock?

hello men of the rifle...I recenty bought an old 1918 Swedish mauser that shot terrific...1and1/2 inch at 100 yds with factory ammo(open sights)...after disassembly and cleaning..took the barreled action out of the stock and then back in..i cant seem to hit the broad side of a barn with it (same ammo and all)....seems like I remember someone telling me one time that one of the two screws that hold the action, trigger and the whole deal together has to be tightened before the other...if so, which one?...one towards the butt or muzzle?...or maybe it doesn't matter...don't know.....help !

When I put mine together, I put em in at 30 in. Lbs, but can't remember which one first.I always do them each a little at a time, tightening back , front back front . Maybe it's misaligned in the stock.

Assuming you have a military rifle with handguards on top of the barrel. Remove the handguards to start. Loosen the action screws completely. Tighten the front screw until it barely seats. Tap the butt of the rifle on the ground, your foot, what ever will not scratch the butt plate a couple of taps. Keeping the rifle pointed up, tighten the rear action screw until it barely seats. Alternate tightening the two a bit at a time until you have about 30 inch/Ibs. of torque. Now replace the handguards being careful not to force any pieces into place, replace the metal. Bear in mind that the rifle will shoot more consistently if the barrel is not touching any wood between the action and the front metal cap of the forend. You can use stock black on the barrel to find any spots that are in contact with the stock/handguards and trim with sandpaper and/or stock barrel channel bedding tool. Glass bedding will make for a more consistent shooting rifle as well if you are not using it for NRA Vintage Sniper competitions. Also plenty of aftermarket triggers for these. I converted mine to cock-on-opening with good success as well. No end to the fun you can have!

I have the Caldwell FAT wrench. It's probably not " BR Gods" approved, but its accurate and serves its purpose.

MidwayUSA has them

where do you get a tool that reads in inch pounds?....
By your question I'll assume this is probably the only use you will have for an in/lb torque wrench. Therefore take a look on Amazon and there is a broad selection. I doubt you are going for a digital one, so my suggestion is to select one that what you are torquing is in the middle ( or close to it) of the wrenches range. e.g. 20-100 is better than 20-200.

This will get you by .
