Is it too much? Barrel shipping...

I just ordered a barrel from a wisconsin manufacturer and had it shipped to me in Illinois outside of St. Louis so not a coast to coast shipment. Almost same state.... Got the bill almost $45 to ship ground. Included in the charge was a 3% CC surcharge (which I get I own a business) That just seems very high. We ship about $500k a year with FedX and UPS and get great rates....are these guys (hate to say overcharging) or are they not negotiating there rate very well. that just seem so damn high for ground....I’m going to put it in our system and see what it would cost us....as far as 3 percent CC fee I get it I have huge transactions clients want to put on CC and tell them no or 4 percent ($50k plus transactions) I would of paid it no complaints but most of those fees are built into the price via retail pricing. IF not would of been nice to be at least told. 20 INCH barrel

I don't ever remember paying more than 20 bucks to either get a barrel shipped or to ship one priority mail. IIRC, the last one I shipped went to to the midwest from the east coast and it was 18.45 with 200 bucks insurance.

Fed X charges a surcharge on items shipped in a round tube. I found out the hard way.

They said it is because of their conveyors. When I order barrels direct from a manufacturer, they usually come in a round tube. When I order one from Brunos, I think I remember them coming in a rectangular box.

Sounds a bit $ steep.
Insuring the shipment for the cost $ of the item will knock up the shipping fees. Was the shipment insured ?

That is to much to charge for shipping. And that would be a deal breaker for me also. There are plenty of good barrel makers out there to have to put up with that. It might be an inconvenience but I would go elsewhere.

I ordered two of those barrels and my shipping and handling fee was $76. It was definitely a surprise when I looked at the invoice .

Thats worse than mine....the added weight doesnt reflect that much of an increase....really like the company but may be shopping elsewhere OR at least disclose it...

Some companies do not do enough volume to get the best rate possible, and even then , the company I work for ( 650 employees,30 branches stretching from Montana to Wisconsin) still has to pay $60 per month, JUST to have UPS's software on our premises.. That's $15 a week, just to have the ability to send an electronic message to have the driver stop and pick up our packages.
I couldn't imagine how much they rape smaller companies with lower volume, or that are "out of the way" from their normal routes thru town.
Even sending a small package thru UPS, outside the states border, without the "handling" fee our company adds cost me as an employee $12-$18.
.
I think a lot of these smaller companies, might use a "UPS store" or similar 3rd-party shipper to send packages, which of course is marked up to cover the cost of their store fronts and employees.
.
If I can, I always try to use SpeeDee delivery, and sell to people within their delivery area .. Last week I sold a FoxPro caller to a guy, 1.5 hours South of me, all packaged in a larger box, with tons of protective air pillows, and it cost me $5.92 .. Cheaper than the USPS . I don't know how they do it, maybe by staying small, and not trying to offer delivery outside of their established route area is the key.
.
Fed Ex is a nightmare ,, if you have 2-packages, One going out ground, and another that needs 2nd or next day air delivery, they literally send 2-seperate drivers, on two separate trucks to pick them up,, Yet they all go back to our local airport to be sorted out with other mixed packages.

That seems like a lot. I just ordered a 20" heavy barrel for my AR and it was $9 from 3 states away.

I've never seen any seller of a complete firearm charge anywhere near that much on gunbroker.com. Something is wrong and it would be a deal breaker for me also.
I also know on ebay for example, some sellers will advertise with a lowest price for an item, only to charge a much higher shipping fee....sly trick that I don't like and tend to not buy from those devious sellers.

They make a nice profit by overcharging on shipping costs. Wonder if they declare it as profit on their income tax filing?

I hope you don't have product on the Fedex truck in Calera, Okla. yesterday. Don't know how as it was in town and no ice on the road, but it jacknifed and truck, trailer, and PUP were in a knot.

I bought one of those barrels from the folks in Wis. You are right, $45 for shipping is a joke. Won't be buying another.
It is not fair to say "those folks in WI", when referring to barrel makers. There are many in that state, including Rock Creek, Brux, Lederer, Krieger, Bartlein, Broughton, and Obermeyer. There are more, but those come to mind. James
