Brownell's doesn't have Ed's Red. Are there other carbon removers that are just as good? I've been using KG #1, and it has worked satisfactorily. Is Ed's Red better?
Plenty of recipes for Ed's Red on the internet and I believe a search on this site will provide the formula.Brownell's doesn't have Ed's Red. Are there other carbon removers that are just as good? I've been using KG #1, and it has worked satisfactorily. Is Ed's Red better?
Sorry about this, my post above was off the top of my head and not correct. I made a gallon and a half so long ago, I forgot the actual recipe. The eds red recipe I got from Ed Harris was
1 qt ATF
1 qt Kerosene
1 qt marvel mystery oil
1 qt acetone (optional)
Ed's red has it's uses. The main being how one would use a CLP type product. Mainly I use Ed's Red to clean and soak AR15 parts that have carbon caked on from the gas operation. If one does any of the CMP high power competition formats with an AR, you use a ton of cleaning solvents. The processes I ended up on was to strip my BCG and place the parts in a tupperware container of Ed's Red the night after returning from CMP league practice (100-150 rounds fired). Then a week later, the night before the next practice, cleaning those parts would be super quick. It cut atleast an hour off my cleaning time.Ordinary carbon - not the baked on hard stuff - it is hard to beat Butch's Bore Shine, Shooters' Choice Bore, or any other other well know, and well used - bore cleaner.
For the really tough baked on carbon and/or a ring -> Iosso, JB Bore Paste, or something similar.
I gave up mixing various "home brews" years ago. Got tired of the spilling, making a mess, and having partial containers of volatile and stinky ingredients kicking around. Further, nothing I made up worked any better than the above mentioned products.
So do yourself a favor ... and ditch the hassle. Just buy some readily available, quality products, and go from there.

I just ordered some from Midway.Bore Tech C4 is the best stuff for removing carbon.
I did the same! I have a lifetime supply (1 gallon) was the smallest I could find!Yeah, you make your own, but although I still have a can of
it I made, I stopped using it when I found "Piston Kleen",
