Iron sight questions

So I used to shoot 3 position back in high school...trying to get set up for high power. Got myself a spacegun set up, got a rightsight and a Warner rear sight. When I shot with a 22, we left the front sight on and took the rear sight off every time we put our rifles in their cases, and finger tight was good enough...I got a Warner rear sight and it has an Allen screw, which makes it seem like finger tight won't cut it on centerfires...how tight are you supposed to make the screws on these sights? Are you leaving the Warner style rear sights on the rifles? Or removing it before casing as well?
Now it seems the rightsight might benefit from being removed each time as well...is that what you guys do?
Thanks,
Ken

Cody, how tight do you make the attachment screws?
Erik, what kind of case do you use? How tight do you make your attachment screws?
Thanks,
Ken

With my Allen wrench set I just tightened them to a hit the wall of resistance plus about a 1/4 turn. I'm sure there is some specific foot pound it's supposed to be at by that's just how I had mine.

All soft cases for me. I've used a Prone 2 Success soft case for the last few years, but recently switched to one of the soft cases that Champion's Choice was selling at Camp Perry this summer. Both are good cases, the new CC one has a lot more room for extra stuff. I've shot nearly 300 days of HP and prone matches since 2007, and just have never come across a situation where I'd need to take my sights off unless I need to do something with them. For transportation and storage it is a non-issue. I know a lot of shooters do, but it's not for me.

I do about the same as Cody for tightening, just snug it up with an allen wrench plus a bit extra.

Good luck,
Erik

Most midrange matches 3x600 allow you to shoot any sight (a scope or iron sights) the first string for record then iron sights the next 2 strings for record. So I'll take off my warner rear sight and front sight to shoot scope then put the irons back on to complete the match. It amazes me how good zero's are held doing this. (maybe a click or 2 off)

Now as far as protecting you sights, buy a good case and you'll not have problems. If you don't want to or can't shoot scope for the first string of fire, I wouldn't remove the sights just because.
