Iron front sights (Centra Goliath)

I am going to put together a rifle set up for scope and iron sights. I have a Centra Goliath front sight with the .750 clamp.

What size and length does the barrel need to be turned to optimize the clamp? I have seen .750 by 1.5" long, is this correct?

Thank you for sharing your experience!
;D

Iron sights

Yup, that will work just fine. Have the smith turn the muzzle end down to .749 to ensure a good fit for the front sight.

Iron sights

Yup. That's pretty standard. .749"x1.5" or so. I think the sight base is probably more like .75" or so, but there's no good reason to cut it shorter. The gun won't shoot any better, and if you really want that extra fraction of an inch of sight radius, you can always mount the sight forward of the step at the end of the .749" section.

Thank you for the info guys!

Another question...

Is it standard for these expensive sights, like the Centra Goliath, to come shipped in a cheap plastic ziplock bag, with no paper work or instructions from the manufacturer, supposedly new and unused?? Also, If someone with experience with this particular sight could tell me if these come a little rough looking brand new?

Not that it is exceedingly damaged, but with slight scratches in the finish, and a feeling that the sight had been mounted and removed before. also, the locator ring has a burr that keeps that two rings from aligning quite right, it would be a quick touch with a fine file, but you know... Not to be knit picky, but I think for items that cost an excess of a couple of hundred bucks per piece the product should be packed, protected, and shipped a little better than a cheapo plastic ziplock.

Reason I'm asking is, this is what Sinclair's sent me, and I am wondering if this is how they are shipped by other retailers.

Yes that muzzle tenon spec is standard for target rifles. Some even make it a bit longer; you do NOT want to mount the sight base snug against the step - a small gap is recommended. As for packaging: a competitor product comes wrapped in self-adhesive bubble wrap, each part separate with all in a cardboard box. Never having ordered something like this from Sinclair I don't know their usual practice, but a Centra 30mm iris I bought used last year came in a factory printed plastic snap-lid box with the iris secured in a foam insert.

Had I received what you describe, the phone would be the next thing in my hand. That sounds very suspicious & rather unlike what I'd expect from Sinclair.

Lastly - cut the tenon to 0.750". The sight base will work fine as it's designed to clamp onto a tenon of that dimension. No clearance is needed.

Nate,

Thats correct, but this fraction of an inch helps keeping the nut safer off the muzzle blast.

Contacted Sinclair's, they said to send it back for an exchange. Fairly quick reply when sent to the right person. I too have not expected this sort of thing from Sinclair. Their willingness to make things right is nice. I hope they will pack it better in the future.

I also ordered an adjustable iris and it arrived as you described. Did yours come with the locking ring tool? Mine did not. That is why I suspected this set may have been a return.

I appreciate everyone's replies. Making this newbie to irons understand a little better!

Honestly I don't know. I never took it - or the foam insert - out of the plastic box. I'll have to look later this afternoon, see if it's underneath everything.
