IR Gun for Annealing Brass

So, lads, I'm using an HF Irfra Red gun to measure the temp my necks are getting. If I set the annealer to cycle each piece for 17 sec. the temp gets to the mid 600's using camp stove propane. Is this a reliable method to get the necks up to @650 F? I'm thinking of using MAP gas to get the time down. Anybody using this method?IMG_6930.jpeg

With that IR, you need to be within 1/2” of brass to get correct reading without getting the temp in the background. Your brass looks to be toast.

I would be worried that 16 seconds of heat exposure would let the heat travel too far down the case and cause a soft case head region.

We use them where I work for reading steam lines and hydronic heat lines. We never ready the temp off the brass valves and fittings as the reflective shiny surface never gives accurate readings and is always well below the temperature observed off black iron pip and fittings.

IF you want to use an I.R. type product for measuring you'll need to step up to something like a Flour I.R. camera.
