INVASION!

Went out to get mail today and saw this across the road from my property. There are a total of eight holes along about a 30 yard stretch. Obviously groundhog holes and none of them were there yesterday. Elimination is going to be a bit problematic since I can't legally shoot across the road and I have no traps. Should be interesting!

Does the 'soda water poured into the burrows' trick work with ground hogs? As in asphyxiate with CO2?

Haven't heard of that trick. Tried mothballs several years ago when we had a few pop up on our property next to the house, but they just pushed them out and used them to decorate the entrances!

Up until about 7 years ago there was an abandoned house back about 50 yards from there. Provided me with up to 20 groundhogs a year until it was finally torn down. Haven't seen a sign of them since until now.

Just looked the holes over closer and think it might have been coyotes trying to dig out a gopher colony. That's right where I often see gophers when I mow and I did see one track in the dirt that was clearly canine. Rest of the tracks are scuffed over and too blurred for identification. Most of the holes only go a foot or so deep and I will look with a light later to see if the others go much deeper.

Looks like it will take some very sneaky covert action and timing with the fine tuned rifle, at very judious timing.

Well, I went out and looked into them with a good flashlight this afternoon. Some are holes only a foot or so deep by about 8" in diameter. The rest are quite deep and make right angle turns about 18" below the surface. I thought about running my Teslong into the tunnels to see what I could see but I figured there was no point since the focus wouldn't work in that large of a hole. Besides, my luck would be that while I was watching my screen something would jump out of another hole and bite me in the ass!
I still only see two tracks that I can positively identify as canine and several blurred tracks that appear to be elongated with a "hand" like shape. Still think groundhog(s) with a coyote or dog checking out the disturbance at some point. One heck of a lot of dirt moved. Has to be done at night since i haven't seen anything and our road is pretty busy.

When I lived in North Central Arizona, my little ranch house was surrounded by a Gunnison's prairie dog colony. Approximately 30 acres worth. For several years, I just shot the ones that crossed over the fence into my front and back lawn areas (5 acres). Every year, I had to spend a lot of time shooting the little critters because every year the pups would have to leave the nest looking for a home and my green pasture grass was too much for them to pass up. Finally, at the suggestion of a long-time high desert dweller, I jury rigged a lawn mower with a hose running off the exhaust. I ran the hose down every hole in the area with the result that I asphyxiated a large number of the occupants of those holes. Although the marauding coyotes suffered from a loss of one of their staple foods, it was a very effective way of ridding my property of plague carrying, tree and flower destroying vermin, and had the added effect of no longer drawing coyotes in to eat my barn cats, chickens and turkeys. It's just a thought, but do you have a lawn mower?
