Internships

OKBoomer

Spencer Aycock
My oldest son is an aerospace & mechanical engineering student at Oklahoma State Univ. in Stillwater, OK. He’s lining up internship possibilities now for the summer of 2021. He’s a physics and math wiz, can write some code, and shoots some FTR with me. Anyway, I’m wondering if anyone here has insight into possible internship opportunities with companies that make stuff for what we do, e.g. makers of bullets, brass, parts, accessories, tooling, etc.

if he wants to get into the electric utility business we have interns every year. not sure how its going to work this year since we're not even considering opening our offices until january. his closest opportunity would be in Little Rock, Ark or nuclear in Russellville, Ark which is even closer.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, he is already searching the big companies that publicly announce internships. But, I thought I’d cast a net here for some possible insider info on internships that some of the smaller companies might have. He’s interested in aerospace and ballistics.

I thought I saw something recently with KBR- Kellogg Brown and Root, might take a look there. A neighbors son did a internship with Siemens.

Contact Hornady. I know they used to have an internship program and for the foreseeable they need all the help they can get.

Ruger would be a good start. And there are several places to shoot nearby, if he ends up in Mayodan, NC.

Nothing like launching a bullet shaped craft with a satellite or load of astronauts onboard. Space-X and Firefly are frequently hiring internships here in TX. Indeed has listings.

OKC used to have a few aerospace companies doing bus. around/in Tinker AFB. I am not sure now. I would check with the Noble Foundation for sure.

In this business, designing bullets with good BC/weight characteristics is close to aerospace.

I dont think berger or sierra has much of that development going on in house- but you can sure check with bryan litz and see if he has anything

Thought I read an article in the Daily Oklahoman last week, about a company that makes drones for the military, down there in OK. Might contact someone at Tinker, AFB, or the FAA down on MacArthur blvd, about UAV's for the gov't. and who might have an internship.

With Ruger buying Marlin, maybe that would be a good place to inquire about internships, as mentioned

Given the current environment, don't restrict your search to any particular city/state. Most tech internships (especially in enterprise software/SaaS) are being performed remotely via zoom.

Again, thanks for taking the time to contribute to my inquiry. I’ll shift tactics and have him “target” his approach. Ruger, Hornady, Litz, Space-X, Firefly all sound great. The aerospace groups around Tinker could turn up something, as well as the remote concept for tech work.

He’s sharp, and I didn’t want his options limited to the transportation industry.
