Internet sales tax

On another message board a poster lived in a state XX with 9% ST. He went to state YY where ST was 6% and bought a snowblower and paid the 6%. Upon return to his state XX, they demanded that he pay them the 3% difference.
Same thing when I bought my tacoma. Portland has no sales tax Washington had their hand out ready

if you don't to get a title for it don't tell them,.

Jersey is getting more aggressive. Just going to a “Public beach” is taxed. They call it a fee but what’s the difference. They also started a “rent tax” specifically aimed at folks renting thier beach houses that they already pay the “appropriate” taxes on.
The “rain tax” is pure genius or stupidity, depending on your political affiliation!
Let’s face it. If you work hard, save your money and create any “wealth”, the ones who don’t are coming for it!
Ah, there I go getting pessimistic!

Sounds like jimmy mcmillan WAS right- the rent is just too damn high.

Yeah; me too.

Bought a kayak online from out of state. Went to register it and get a boat license....clerk wanted either a receipt showing I paid local state sales tax, or a check for 7.5% (or whatever) state tax....

More recently, I bought a pair of boots online and was charged state sales tax. I emailed the vendor and explained my state does't tax clothing; they refunded the tax...

You need a “boat license” for a kayak??? Are you kidding me? That’s worse than the tax!

Here in Iowa there is a form to fill out and send to the state if you are improperly charged ST. I heard that eBay was whacking for ST on exempt items so until they get it fixed I'd refrain from buying exempt items on eBay.

Here in TN, the total sales tax for my county is 9.75%, about 7.75% is state, and the local numnuts (county officials) can set the local sales tax rates. We also have a "wheel tax" of $25 on each auto tag renewal in addition to the "registration fees" of about $24.50, so each registered vehicle is right at $50/yr. The public at large (another class of numnuts) voted down an increase in property taxes (deductible on tax returns) because they didn't want an increase in property taxes, so the "wheel tax" ,which is not tax deductible was implemented.

The ranch I manage bought a new vehicle. After paying all the state and local taxes and registrations fees, that new vehicle will cost them around $8k for the first 5 years of ownership.
State income tax is about 5%, sales tax around here runs 7% to over 10%. Property taxes are another couple grand a year.

I buy most everything I can online, and usually try to buy from someone that does not charge me the sales tax.

I'm guessing most states license all watercraft, powered or not. Not that I get any benefit from it; certainly don't need boat launches (in fact some launch ramps don't even allow non-trailer parking). In MINN. any non-powered over 10' needs to be registered

Vendors - online or brick and mortar - don't charge tax, they are forced to collect it.

Registration of a new vehicle here is several hundred dollars or more.

Once a state knows they can get that extra cash they will put that burden on the owner. Back in the day in ND only boats with motors. Now all of them need a license. It is total BS. I still do not have my canoe licensed.

In TN, an unpowered kayak (paddle only) does not require any registration, if you put a electric or gas motor on it, treated just like a larger boat requiring registration sticker & numbers be displayed. Cost about $25/yr IIRC, I usually buy a 3 yr renewal to avoid the hassle of a new sticker every year.

In the 70s & 80s the mob was making 8-10 million a week by collecting gas tax and not paying it. There will be a lot of this with no one to police it.
That may have been possible then, when paper records were the only way to track business activity. The electronic paper trail on the Internet now, which is very closely monitored and recorded by our federal government, will be all they need to come after those who don't pay. At the federal level, those resources are already available and the effort to use them is low. Being federal law, they have established the authority and the individual states no longer have to figure out how to chase tax evaders.

Yeah, the Mob figured it out. They just became politicians!

As a buyer is that really a concern? I think its the sellers responsibility to pay the tax. Just buy from a retailer smart enough to only sell under $100k from each business

The less money your state collects on sales tax the more other creative ways they come up with getting the lost revenue from you.

I have never seen a TITLE on a snow blower, bought anywhere. Did I miss something ?

I can't say for sure that it was a snowblower that the gent I cited was referring to, but whatever it was he apparently declared it or tried to register it.

Then there was IIRC John Kerry who wanted to register his yacht in a different state to save $25K on taxes.
