Instruction Manual wisdom

This was in the instruction manual of a product I purchased recently that I found amusing but so true.

The warnings, precautions, and instructions discussed in this instruction manual cannot cover all possible conditions and situations that may occur. It must be understood by the operator that common sense and caution are factors which cannot be built into this product, but must be supplied by the operator.

On the list of things that should go without saying:
There’s a factory sticker on my mill, with a cartoon of severed fingers, warning me not to touch the turning tool.
I’ll try to remember…

Hey Fellers, my fokes came to this spot in Arkansas in the early 1800's, farmers, hunters, trappers, what ever it took to put food on the table. I grew up listening to the older ones and learning how from the younger ones and I've come to one conclusion on my own in the 79yrs I've been here...."it's more important to know what for DAMN sure NOT to do than anything else"!! You'll figure out the rest when you get hungry.... John

Can't believe you posted that. You should listen to them whine on this very forum if you suggest that someone google something for themselves. But your a "gold contributor" so it's probably Okay.

I often wonder the additional costs required in an attempt to idiot proof a product and mitigate the onslaught of injury lawyers ready pounce on a business.

Case in point, I saw on the news where the Federal Government is going to require auto makers to have some kind of warning system to help remind drivers not to leave children or pets in a car when the temperatures are in the danger zone. If you are stupid enough to leave a child or pet in a car under such circumstances, not mention leaving a child unattended, there is no hope for you. You are brain dead.

Myself and Mrs. HonkinD both have 2024 Ford vehicles, they both give a warning on the dash when you shut it off to "Check rear seat for occupants" They do this if there is any weight on the seats that the vehicle thinks might be a person.

A long time ago, a Darwin Award recipient (pusthumously,) caused a change in manuals from thereon.

He bought a brand new Winnebago motor home with cruise control. He had just retired and finally was going to take that cross country trip he had always hoped for.

Driving along, he got hungry. He turned on and set the cruise control. Then, he got up and went to the kitchen to make a sammich. Soon enough, with no one holding the steering wheel, it wandered off the road and crashed. The old man was killed in the accident. His family sued Winnebago and won.

From then on, they had to include that cruise control was for vehicle speed only, that it will NOT steer the vehicle.

The same thing happened in Canada circa 1967/8.

An East Indian family arrived in Toronto and rented a motorhome that was based on a Chrysler chassis. Driving along the highway 401 the driver engaged the AUTOPILOT and went to the rear, and the vehicle wandered into the rhubarb righting off the vehicle. It was after that incident, by about 3 or 4 years, that autopilot became cruise control.

My grandpa used to say about some people "he has so little sense he couldn't make change for a nickle". I've know quite a few that fit this description.
