Info on NRL 22

Hello everyone
I am just kind of curious about NRL 22. I was on the website and looking around and we have a few match places close to where I live. I was going to try F class F-T/R and I realized I probably need a ton more practice for even 600 yds. So I think I start with something that will be easier and less expensive to start out with and practice for.
Base class has a MAX of $1200 MSRP for rifle and scope. Would anyone have suggestions on what combo to start with for this? Also what kind of ammo would you all suggested or recommend.
Thanks much in advance.

The CZ - 457 and a Vortex Diamondback FFP

I would suggest a Bergara B-14 as it is a Remington 700 footprint and uses full size magazines as well. SK Standard Plus is widely used for it's accuracy and price point.

This puts you over the price. I believe the $1200 is for rifle and scope combined.

Tikka, CZ, Bergara BMR, Ruger Precision would all be options that will work. Arken or a Vortex scope would keep you in the price range.

Spend lots of time trying to get the rifle balanced and shooting over weird barricades.

A step ladder works well to practice moving from position to position. Just use each rung as a new spot.

Buy a ton of cheap ammo to practice with.

Spend some money on a few bricks of “match ammo” for the matches.

It’s a lot of fun.

My understanding - might be wrong - was that the limited class was meant for beginners to just get out there and shoot what they already probably had. Not to buy a specific setup to camp out in that class and stay there for year after year. At least that was the way it was explained to me. So I took my Sav MkII TRR, put a half-decent scope on it (Vortex Diamondback), and had a good time. I've got a CZ457 MTR that I'll use if I keep at.

Thanks for the GREAT INFO - I have a older Ruger 10/22 that I just fixed the trigger on (it was almost 7#). It has the 20" SS tapered barrel on it. I just bought an Arken SH4 and I am going to start practicing with reg 22 ammo (CCI, remington, etc..) and get comfortable with shooting from different positions. I plan on trying some SK, Laupa and Eley black that I purchased recently. I was mostly curious on what people were having the best results with and was going to purchase something different, but I think I am going to "run what I brung"

NRL is many times more extensive, complicated and 'difficult' than f-class.
I say this as an f-class shooter who tried NRL type shooting once and retired back to f-class.

That's not bad or good, just depends on what you like.

NRL22 is fairly popular at our club, and yes there are some expensive rifles there, I feel there is no need.
This is a shooters match, not an equipment match.
Know you rifle, practice, know your rifle, practice some more.
All the expensive equipment in the world will not make you a marksman, practice & know your rifle will make you a marksman.

Aaron

From what I have seen of NRL, it is already an equipment race. True all the expensive stuff won’t make a poor shooter shoot better, but a poor rifle set up will do little more than frustrate a good shooter.
I know they have a “class” for old fat farts with stiff joints like me.
I get the reason for the set ups and challenges they set up, most of the time. Some of it I saw as more of a memory game than a shooting competition.
I think it is also a good game and a fun game. It will only cost you as much as you let it, suppose that depends on how competitive one is. I compete against myself and chase a personal best, anything more or less, is what it is.

At the local range we have a 22lr match series that is not affiliated with the nrl, but is the same style of shooting. At first one could win with an average gun by being a great marksman. It eventually evolved to the point where you now need a very accurate gun and insane marksmanship. My Savage MkII was a 2 moa gun at best, even with center x. My rimx with a good lot of sk standard + is a 3/4 moa gun for 10 shots at 100 yards. With a typical lot of sk standard plus it is about a 1.25 moa gun for 10 shots. Even a bad lot of sk semi-auto will hold 1.5 moa out of it. Some of the targets we shoot now in matches are smaller than 2 moa and almost all hover around the 2 moa size until past 180 yards. There is no way my old mkII would be competitive anymore.

If it is similar at your club, I would get a b14r to get started. If you go down the rabbit hole you can move the upgrades over to a vudoo or rimx. Sk standard + shoots really good for the price. I would not personally go cheap on the scope. I run a Strike Eagle 5-25 and the glass is okay for watching bullets fly at 100 yards. It will do better in good light conditions.

A better scope will let you watch bullets at 150-200 yards and is very beneficial in making corrections during a course of fire. When I really want to be competitive, I swap a scope off one of my centerfires to help with this.

As has been stated, you can put as much or as little as you want into it. However, I will warn you that things have gotten VERY competitive. If you want to have a chance to win, you will need a great barrel, some good ammo, a good scope, and a shitload of practice.

If you just want to spend a day at the range with the guys, use what you have. It will be a lot of fun.

Sounds like you're having fun and I like everything you suggested. If you feel the barrel is limiting you on your b14 r why not throw a Muller or shillen ratchet on it?... it's already a super solid action with very good ignition and a solid chassis/stock. I purchased my b14r about a year ago with every intention to shoot it have some fun and then swap out the barrel but after a tuner some bolt work and polishing I'm not 100% sure any barrel I put on it is going to much more accuracy. I'm sure I got lucky with my copy being exceptional but the action and everything else is an excellent starting point for any build. Have fun,
G.

I would suggest a combo of Savage MkII FV-SR and Athlon Argos BTR Gen 2 6-24x50 with a DIP 25 moa rail and Burris XTR Signature rings with enough moa to bottom out the scope.

This combo will leave plenty of room in your budget, not referring to NRL22 constraints, for bags, bipod and ammo to practice.

Nothing wrong with this. I'm wrapping up my second full year in base class. Part of the reason I stayed was I was still learning, but another part was that it didn't cost me anything to stay. I have a 2 MOA rifle that I bought 7 years ago and base class has been good on the budget and challenging to shoot.

I did finally buy a Vudoo, but if my rifle was better I would have stayed in base class just to see how good I could get with it.

No one has mentioned it yet, make sure your scope has parallax adjustment down to 25 yards. They like to run stages up close sometimes.

Don't get hung up with what class you are in. Buy what you want to shoot. Compete against yourself.

I bought a CZ 457 At-One and got hung up on making the base class. It was $1100 then. I ended up getting what I wanted scopewise and was very happy with my rig. The course of fire is the same and I sucked. I would have sucked in base class as well.

I got a great deal on a Savage FVSR and was planning on using it, then I found a used Bergara B14R, the difference is night and day, it is tail heavy and needs some weight added forward. I added an Arca rail that I filled with lead, the trigger can be adjusted down to 1 1/2lb. My friend has a CZ457 that shoots great and would be high on my list. One of the local competitors shoots a Tikka and finishes near the top each month (could be the shooter also). There are a couple of Savages and Rugers there, but I don't ever see them in the top 3. I see a CZ ,Bergara, or Tikka in the top 3 at least once a month (sometimes there is a NRL22 and PRS22 in the same month.
