Inexspensive fun build

Well it's really not dirt cheap but for under $400 not a bad build, old Suhl 150 barrel,Barska 10-40 Target dot scope, cheap bipod,so far a 1 holer at 25 yards, gettin ready to try different barrel lengths and a small tuner and better ammo, time ill tell:)001.JPG 002.JPG

Humm.....looks like fun, But as far as I know from my days of shooting a T/C Contender, that gun looks like it is not legal. I'm pretty sure you cannot have a barrel longer than 16 inches on a "hand gun". Best to check it out before you get in trouble. I could be wrong about that, but I would check to make sure.

I think it is a rifle. It would be legal if the barrel is over 16 inches and the overall length is over 26 inches. Also I don't know of any maximum barrel length for a pistol if it was in fact manufactured as a pistol. I'm not a lawyer and could very well be wrong.

Since there is no rifle stock barrel length may be any I want as it was sold as a pistol and remains a pistol. If it had been sold as a rifle the minimum barrel length would be 16 inches. The barrel length as of the moment is 22-23 inches from receiver to barrel end. This might change a bit as I may shorten it to see if accuracy can be improved and more than likely will also add a small tuner. It is a rimfire btw

Pistol barrels can be as long as you want . Was a while ago long barred pistols were called wrist ? Dang , forgot what I was going to say . Sorry

Will do,For now it's just a fun thing to tinker with.I have purchased an old Time tuner thats lightweight enough to keep the front end weight down as well.Hopefully after my gunny gets back after New Years we can keep going forward, cutting the barrel back a bit to see what works best (thinkin 22 inch) and adding the tuner to see what kind of results we can get.It does look promising but highly doubtful it would ever be competitive in BR formats, but still for now a fun build.I will continue with reports as we progress

Suggest you or your Smith slug the barrel before shortening it from the muzzle end; if the barrel has any choke effect at the muzzle, what sdneil said is a very real possibility. If the bore reduces at the muzzle (which is desirable), you need to shorten from the breech and rechamber. If it gets tighter before the muzzle, shorten back to there and re-crown, a d shorten from the .puzzle end no further.

Just some things to think about; great project - keep us posted, for sure.

Thanks for the advice, but he is a professional and I'm a competitive shooter,we already know that info and will do what needs to be done accordingly. It will be recut and crowned at the smallest point and we'll move forward from there, lots of other things to work on as well,Trigger needs work, bedding issues regarding a somewhat flimsy pistol stock, heavy forend weight all will be addressed in the coming weeks. It's not a rush job. He's a revered centerfire smith and now in the process of learning smallbore from some of the best out there to learn from. Like I said it's just a small project for now with some possibilitys going forward, but basicaly a fun gun we are toying with.As we move forward I'll apprise y'all of things we do and find that work for us to hopefully make it competitive.

I didn't go this route to initially make it a super competitive pistol as it has it's limitations as it was received from the manufacturer, but it is as stated a fun project and we hope it will be competitive. If not it will still be a fun gun to have around for occasional shoots.I'd really like to see others purchase one, build it to it's best by keeping the basic pistol intact (same trigger, action, stock) and maybe start having competitions based on that idea.Just an inexpensive class of pistol to compete with,an anomally to the constant barrage of high dollar purchase's we usually contend with in BR shooting. It does have a match chamber as opposed to the original. The stock is hollow in the grip area and we are adding weight there to counter the barrel length weight.I might even add a bag rider so I could utilize a rest, who know's where it will go,enjoy the ride:)

One other caveat I see is the possibility of showing up for a match with a single bag and just ammo to shoot with vs the constant back and forth to my vehicle, loading, unloading at match's.This should be a walk over put up on bench and shoot kinda pistol that possiby can contend with some other BR styled pistols and rifles, doubtful but working towards that

BATF says a rifle has a 16" + barrel and an OAL of 26". It's STILL a rifle, no matter what it looks like. A pistol can have any barrel length.
