Indoor Shooting w/Iron Sights Help

I belong to a indoor shooting range with a 100 yrd range. I tried shooting at 100 yards with my surplus rifles with iron sights and the lighting is not good enough for me to get the front sight lined up with the rear and still focus on the target. Using the same rifle and target outdoors is not an issue. My targets are about 8" solid circles either red or black. Any tips on painting the sights different colors or using different targets?

As my coach told me (this was indoor pistol in college), "You can't see everything clearly. Focus on the front sight; it doesn't matter if the target is a bit blurred, it's not going anywhere". My scores came up to the next level when I quit trying to focus on the target.

Sometimes when I shot service rifle if my eye got tired I would put fresh sight black on and then a small pencil mark on the front blade. The contrast between the dark flat black and the shimmery graphite really makes that front post pop. At least it did for me.

Also if you can try adjusting the rear aperture. This may allow your eye to gather more light making it easier to concentrate and locate the front post.

Also you can try modifying your sight picture. 6 o'clock, line of white, navy, frame. These are all different sight pictures. Try something new you might be surprised.

And I agree with outrider that not everything is going to be clear. You want to concentrate on the front post.

When I competed regular in Service Rifle we had one range that had covered firing positions. It was a real pain in the butt to maintain front sight focus in the shade. Always easier on an open range. The indoor ranges probably just have a light quality difference. On a side note I always took a needle dipped in white enamel and applied a small dot in the center of the front post (tiny dot). This would automaticly command focus on the front sight.

Hold at 6 oclock, in the white, at the bottom of a 6" or 8" black bullseye.

Apply Birchwood Case sight Black to the front post sight.

Rig up some kind of front sight shade hood attachment. Like on some old 30-30 rifles.
