My first "accurate" rifle was a used Savage F Class 6mmBR Norma that I bought for $800. It still shoots better than I can (.25moa) after 1000+rds.
Then I was bitten by the "IMP" bug as I aspired to shoot 1000yds. So I spent $500 for a 6Dasher barrel only to find that the fire forming was a waste of powder, bullets and barrel life (not to mention a P.I.T.A.) to gain at most 3% velocity.
So I sold that barrel and spent another $500 for a 6x47Lapua tube. Necking down the 6.5x47 brass required neck turning for my chamber (another P.I.T.A.) and again I found I was burning 20%-25% more powder, with commensurate loss of barrel life and increased recoil, to gain only about 6% velocity.
I ran the ballistics and realized that with a 6BR I was only giving up a maximum of 10% drift at 1000yds. Realizing that wind VARIATION is a far greater factor, I am back to my plain 6BR. An added benefit is that I can shoot 105gr bullets using free recoil, which I have found gives better accuracy.
When the crosswind picks up I bring out my 6.5x47L.
