In One Ear And Out The Other

If it's Tuesday . . . Well, you know the drill.

Started out early in the morning. drving the motorhome to G&G for its annual service. Arrived at 7:45 and was done at 1:00. Drove back home, had lunch and arrived at the golf course by 2. Within a half hour I had four ghogs dead on the ground. All shot in the ear at 83, 72, 72 and 57 yards with the 17 HMR. Spent another half hour looking for more, but the only two I saw decided not to hang around for the main event, the smack down.

This was my last foray for the season. Ended with 75. Off to OH for a visit with the family. Then we hit the road for the trip to FL for the Winter. I'll be following your escapades so keep up the hunt. See you in the Spring.

DB, just got 75 last night myself. An easy shot at 25 yds. standing off my shooting stick/monopod. It sure was a fat one, getting fatter munching in a Winter Wheat field! My Wife says I met my goal and am done now but I am thinking a couple more. I see several a day at work and am thinking on a Saturday afternoon there won't be to many people out and about in the Industrial area. ;)

Keep after the Mr. M! If the season didn't end on 9/30 and we weren't going to OH, I'd still be out there. The way I look at it, there will be more for next year, I hope!

What are the circumstances where you can go to a golf course in the afternoon and shoot?

This is a three 9 hole course that closes one of the nines once a week for maintenance. I have the run of that nine for the day. I do have to be aware of the golfers since two of the nines share a few side by side fairways. I've been doing this for about four years and have never had a problem. It's been a great gig and relationship.

Sounds like a nice arrangement! I would LOVE to do that around here, but there are no courses that can spare the holes.

got # 72 yesterday. largest to date at 13 # 15 oz. speaking of ear shots...twice i've killed a ghog and could not find a bullet hole...no blood, no guts...nothing. a drop of blood was in his opposite ear. closer inspection revealed a very small drop in his entry wound ear. i shoot hollow points that usually come apart right after entry, but due to a ghogs anatomy, a bullet can go thru his head at the earhole level and not hit anything but soft tissue and brain which is water density. exploding heads come from the bullet hitting bone...i love terminal ballistics.

Now that's a big one for sure! Have had lots of kills with hollow points where no entry or exit have been visible. Go figure. I've stopped trying to reason it out.

love to shoot the ghogs...since july have killed about 125...we are loaded with them around here...the farmers will let me go about anywhere i want...

Hmmm, I thought they were fairly rare in NC. We spend a month in eastern NC near Goldsboro every spring. A friend that I shoot with there said he rarely sees one. Would you be in the western end of the state?

I shot 427 of them in Ohio before heading west the end of August. Most were of the alfalfus digestus sub species but several were soybeanus digestus. My second longest kill (1017 yards) was a cowpasturus digestus. ;) :D
