In large barrel channel

muleman69

USMC -1st marine Div. RVN
Need to hog out my barrel channel for new build, do they make a tool for this ? Need to take out about an 1/8" each side

I use deep well sockets. Wrapped in sand paper. 1/2" - 9/16" for working the sides.
5/8" -3/4" for bottom of Chanel
I also mask the fore end to protect it from accidental misshap of rolling over the edge.

I'm with Bc'z deep well socket method. With a full set you can get it perfect, for any barrel contour. I like to mask the fore-end as he mentions, and even mark the points on the stock that match the socket size for that area.
Don't get in a rush, and don't get dumb, and you will be happy and proud of the result. jd

Okay thanks,I did not no they made adhesive backed sand paper sounds good. What grit should a man start with? The barrel will be around .900 thou

Oh and when i say locking extension i mean like a 24” plus extension. And a whole socket set like jd mentioned. Step it up slow. I use a mist of black spray paint as a guide coat. Once its sanded off go to the next size. Harbor freight sockets are not suitable for using as a socket but they will work for this application

Can I wrap up like a 7/8ths with paper and hog out a 1'" channel or will the sides sand faster than the bottom or vis-a-versa?

Right, that's why I use various sizes of sockets. Fatter sockets will widen the top edge to much, tape also works as a guide so as you dont remove to much.
It's how I carve style lines on cars, I'll send you pics when I get outta this no service hole

Solid wood or laminate or fiberglass ? Fiberglass is usually easiest solid walnut next then laminate. Maple is almost if not equal to laminate. The softer or easier it is I'd use 120-150 then to 180-220 and 280-320 maybe 400 or finer as a finish

Hey Marine! PM me your address and I’ll send you what you need. I have the sticky back sandpaper coming out my wahzoo!;) I’ll make you a little “tool” I use, too. I have hunks of wood dowel I put a handle on. Just tell me how big your channel is now and how big you want it to end up. I have different sized dowels.

I dont use 400 as 320 machine is equivalent to 500 by hand, 600 is a waste of time and money. I use 800 to remove paint imperfections" if I have any" as my gun finish is the "shiz nit"
1000 grit agian a waste of time and money.
1200 I really like Maguire's it cuts like 3m's 1000, but has a more uniform grit than 3m.
Wanna see my latest project?
