IMR4895 and Re-loading Powders

Hey all, rather new to the forum,

I know the backorder and lack of items going on these days. I use a considerable amount of IMR4895 and of course, nobody has it. I'm sure I can use H4895 as well, but again, nobody has it. Anyone have any suggestions on where to find this, or a suitable replacement that might actually be available? Luckily I found some before everything went unavailable, but starting run low and looking for options.

Thanks so much for any replies.

What rifles are you loading. Rifles, bullets etc will help get some suggestions.

I’ve pulled what I needed off the sites mentioned above and the Hodgdon website, but I have a lot of time in babysitting those sites. Gets old but what do you do.

I’ve pulled some Tac and accurate 2230 off powder valley lately. Both will work. I’m always too slow on H335 but that’s a good one if you see it. H322, 8208, CFE223 and quite a few others will work. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of recommendations for that what your looking for, your loading for a cartridge that can use a lot of powders. Are you loading for 55 grains and under or heavies, 60+ grains?

I’m loading 55 grain now, so looking for something comparable to the IMR4895 that would work just as well,

I would first make a list of newer powders that are worth buying for my needs. I would look seriously at IMR 4166, an enduron line powder, and the various CFE powders.

I would emphasize European made powders sold in this country under the European brand such as Norma 203b and the various VV powders.

Not a specific powder suggestion just a procedure suggestion.

With that list in hand I would check regularly at all the established sites especially Powder Valley and Graf's until I had a chance to buy enough of something for a while.

I suspect but do not know that IMR production is someday going to be limited to Enduron or something like Enduron. I believe demand for either 4895 is extreme even in today's market because the powders are so versatile. I accept that to cover the same range of loads I might have to buy two or more of more available powders and I'm prepared to do that. I've given up sneering at 760 or BallC(2) as too temperature sensitive and settle for having some especially 760 for versatility.

I have satisfied myself that my own best chance to buy powder is to follow everybody in driving distance on Facebook for stock arrivals and to be there first thing or not bother. Vendors are nice about putting arrival notices and selling prices on the web but with a don't bother calling no holds message. No particular knowledge or information about Leesburg but I'm sure there are more stores within driving distance there than there are around here.

Rumor says that Larry Potterfield and Pete Brownell are telling their friends to sign up for notifications and to buy within seconds nobody including themselves and their employees jumps the line.

Pretty much a perfect information market.

If you have some powder laying around you dont use put that up for trade. There is alot of powder in closets of people who have traded guns or found different loads, they are not looking to sell it but they just may be enticed to trade for something you have laying around.

Possible alternatives:

Hodgdon CFE-223

Alliant Re15 (and the new Re TS 15.5 when it appears)

Alliant AR-Comp

Shooters World Precision and Match Rifle

Ramshot TAC, X-Terminator, possibly Big Game depending on application

Accurate-2520

Norma 202 and 203-B

Viht N135 (depending on application); N140/540; N150/550 (depending on application)

IMR-4166 Enduron

IMR-3031 if available and depending on application. This is a far more flexible powder than its position in burning rate tables suggests. Likewise the old 4064 - if still available.

Possibly Alliant Power-Pro MR grades. (We don't have these in the UK, so no experience)
