IMR4350 vs H4831 for .270 hunting load

Been using H4831 behind a 140grn Interlock with excellent results.

Will IMR4350 have any advantages?

Which is less temperature sensative?

I know there are many other powder options but for the sake of this question just looking at these two.

Thanks, Matt.

I have used both with good results, if you bbl is 22", the 4350 may have a slight advantage, if 24"the i find them equal.

my personal experience is the H4831 is slightly less temp sensitive than IMR 4350 so i use H4350.

60 grs H-4831 with a 130 gr bullet has been a pretty universal super accurate load for the 270 Win. I have used it with Sierra and Nosler BT bullets on deer and it really drops them.

I always hear how great the 130grn bullet in the .270 is, and I don't doubt it for a second, but my barrel just doesn't like them. With a number of different 130grn bullets and a lot of load development I never found one that shot even close to a 140grn- who knows.

H 4831 will be less temperature sensative than the IMR powders have been. This could certainly change with Hodgdon now owning IMR but until I see an extreme label on an IMR can I'll probably stick to what has been a factor for years. I did a lot of velocity comparisons years ago between IMR & H 4831 & Hodgdon won every time for the most consistant velocity regardless of summer or winter temps. 58grs of H4831 is a good load for the 140gr bullets. A lot of 270's prefer 140's. Mine do but it's not a huge amount so I keep the need for speed.

i find the 130s shoot at 3000fps and go nuts above that, if you are pushing it you may find that a good lever and .5 accurcy is available at 3000fps.

54gr 4350 will do it every time

I have found that most 140 gr bullets are constructed a little tougher than the 130 gr of even the same make. On 150 lb average deer I have had better DRT kills with the 130's than with 140's with same shot placement. From my 24" barrel I get right at 3150 fps with 60 gr H 4831 with Sierra or Nos. BT's . I have never had trouble getting the 130's to shoot in any 270 I have worked with. But each rifle is a beast unto it's own.

4 shot group at 225 yards with H4831, IMR4350 didn't do anywhere near as well. No chrony but according to load manuals should be around 2800fps. Pushing them harder opened up the groups pretty bad.

I'm with you, with super accuracy like that and the guy can't even hit a quarter, there's a problem somewhere! ;)

All kidding aside, great shooting there (and I know that quarters run like deer once they know they're being shot at, so it's unlikely that the shooter could make a successful running shot on it, even with his super accuracy load). ;)

Thanks for the good replys, just loaded some more up, hope to hit the range when the weather breaks.
