A recent thread said Hodgdon wasn’t replacing it any more because of age. I would still contact them and tell them that you expect more.

Luckily I only have 1# of the stuff same lot # as the OP's. It just turned nasty in the last 3 or 4 months. Sitting out back on a concrete slab until I burn the brush pile in back yard.

Watching the 4451 & it still looks OK.

How would you describe the smell of that stuff?

Very noticeable.....unlike what gun powder normally smells like.....funny thing the actual powder looks normal....it is the cap that has disintegrated going to try and find some plastic caps for the other containers that I have

I suggest you get that stuff out of your house. It is known to be bad. A few bucks worth of powder is not worth the risk.

I have about 1/2 lb of 4451 left. Shoots very well in 6.5. Never knew it to cause problems like 4166 but I check it often. But wow, I would get that stuff out of my house. Looks like a science project went very wrong.

I have 2lbs of 4166 here..

Yeah, I have one pound. I finally opened it this past spring and tried unsuccessfully to work up a load in a .223 for my prairie dog hunt. It’s still good for now, but I need to use it in something.

I opened all mine, about 12 pounds, seemed to smell decent? 3 of them were a touch stronger smelling. What’s the consensus? Throw it as far as you can and spray water on it or keep an eye on it?
