IMR 4895 and the Dasher?

Anyone trying this?

I have tried Varget and R-15 both loads are getting pressure signs well before what I have read. 31 gr of R-15 is not quite hot, but only producing 2825fps. 31.5 grains of varget produced 2850. This is with a 26" barrel. Not sure why I'm not getting the speed others are.....

So I tried IMR 4895 tonight and shot a couple of REALLY nice 100 yard groups, 31 grains produces 2850fps, with no pressure signs.

Anyone else having luck with the IMR? Or any other tips on why I am getting too high of pressure with a "light" load?

What Bullet are you shooting?

Well I shot some more today.

IMR 4895 seems to be pretty darn good. Shot four groups under a half inch at 100 yards, five shots each.

Went out to 440 yards and shot ten shots which all landed in a 5" circle. Tricky winds to deal with, so I'm hoping that had something to do with the accuracy. From what I've read on this gun it should shoot better than that.

31.6 gr of IMR 4895 behind the 107 Sierra, I'm getting 2900fps right on the dot and it still doesn't seem like a high pressure load.

I get very good results in 6BR with H4895. My previous barrel obtained low to mid Dasher velocities with brass lasting 22 firings. All my shooting was with Berger 105 VLD and Hybrids. Mine are 30" Bartlein 5R barrels. The present barrel is getting a little more velocity with 105 Hybrids than you are reporting with the 107 SMK. Granted, I have 4" more barrel.

It looks to be a pretty good choice so far. I have to get out and shoot at the longer ranges to see how it performs. Velocity is slightly better in my gun and the groups are there to match. Might try some Bergers as well.

I got pressure sooner with 4895 than with RL15 in the heat of summer, in my Dasher. Make sure you don't have a pressure ring. 8)

Pressure rIng? What do you mean??

Sorry I meat to type, carbon ring.

Haha....okay......Fill me in on what a carbon ring is?! I don't know all these crazy wild terms!

I'm guessing inside the neck?

How would one tell?

Tried the 4895 again tonight....

Shot pretty good at 440. Quite a bit smaller group and I shot 15 shots this time. No bolt stickiness.

I think I may run with this powder for awhile.

I'm thinking the sticky bolt is due to carbon fouling. Seems like R-15 is burning quite a bit more dirty in my gun than other powders.

A carbon ring is carbon fouling in throat area, I thought I might have one, and a look with a bore scope confirmed it.

One thing that no one has mentioned is the action! For example, a Remington action will start showing pressure before a custom action like a BAT (i.e. sticky bolt). Most custom actions also have a smaller firing pin. You will not see pressure signs on the primer as early with a custom action. Another thing is the primer. CCI-450's, CCI-BR-4's for example have a thicker cup and will stand more pressure than a CCI-400 or Federal 205M. Samuel Hall
