IMR 4064 in 222

So I have oodles of 4064, but the only manual that shows it as a viable powder in the Sierra. Seeing if anyone has had any success with it before I head down that rabbit hole. I have various bullets from 50-55gr.

Speer has published data for 55 grain bullet but if you want to achieve the best accuracy use IMR 4198 or H322.

Agree that it’s too slow and it’s also too bulky. But if you have a bunch and just want to get rid of it, I’m sure the triple deuce will still stack bullets on top of each other using it.

I don't necessarily just want to get rid of it since it works in a lot of other calibers I reload. I was just wondering if it was a viable option that someone had tried.

4064 might be a bit slow for the 222 as others noted, it’s worth a try maybe with 55 g bullets. Berger makes a fine 55g target bullet.

Mike Walker recommended IMR 4895 for 52-53g bullets in the 222, I’ve got my best results with N133.

My 788 agrees with the 4198's, H322 and N133 crowd. Let us know about your results with 4064.

Along those same lines. & I was getting frustrated by a barrel that should shoot better. I used H 380 & a 55 grain/then a 62 grain bullet in a 223. Slower yes, But the accuracy was Stellar. Try a few combinations. going slow won't hurt anything. mike in Ct

How could you be sure ? When i test powders many times the results are opposite my expectations.

I always used IMR-4198 in the .222’s I had. They shot very good. Remington 7 1/2 Primer Nosler 50 gr. Killed a lot of ghogs and crows with them. I believe 4064 will be slow and bulky

22.2g of H322 with a 50g Sierra blitz lead is what I shot on p. dogs, ground squirrels, and coyotes. The 50g sierra lead tip blitz never splashes on coyotes.

Also, PLEASE do not over look the H335 with a 7 1/2 primer with a 50-55g bullet. For a coyote load in moderate weather, it is hard to beat.

Today, if I wanted a one buy, home run powder for the 50-55g bullets, it would be LT32 with a 7 1/2 primer. Speed will be about 100 fps less than H335, but darn accurate.

For a guy that is hunting coyotes and wants the speed of a light bullet, please do not over look the Sierra 45g spt, high velocity bullet and will shoot through thick coyote ribs, hips, and shoulders. I used H335 with Rem 7 1/2 and got some blistering velocity with the 45g Sierra spt.

I shot a lot of the 4198's on dog towns, but I really hate it due to how lousy it throws in any powder measure. IMR 4064 will be as bad as 4198 in a powder measure, but 4064 will work with the 63g Semi points in a 14T. Varget is on the burning rate of 4064.

I used to buy every 40X take off that was used in 222 when everyone was converting 222's in BR competition to 22 & 6 PPC. As the throats got longer, I went to a 55g Sierra semi point, and accuracy was maintained to around 5000 rounds with some pretty hot and heavy shooting on dog towns.

For a volume shooter, H335 and Win 748 will give longer barrel life than any of these stick powders....night and day difference.
