IMR-4064 6BR Load Data

I was looking for a fairly recent thread regarding 4064 as a suitable replacement for Varget in the 6BR. After an extensive search, I cannot find it.

Does anyone recall this thread, or did I simply imagine it. :o

IMR 4064 has a burning rate near that of Varget. It is a different powder so work up your loads from scratch. I just bought 8# of Accurate 4064 to work with, The AA 4064 is shorter grains than IMR 4064. I have used IMR4064 in a 223 using 80 gr bullets and it shot good, I did limited testing but looked like accuracy was nearly the same as Varget. If you have some IMR 4064 start your own load from a low charge and work up. If you work up your load in winter temps back down for shooting in the summer 90* temps as the IMR powders are more affected than the hodgdon extream powders. The nice thing is 4064 is more available than Varget.

Try RE-15 if you can find it. Consistent small groups in my accurate varmint rifle (6br 14 twist) with any bullet 58-70 grains. Varget, H322 and 8208 also work well. All give good velocity. I have not seen RE-15 in the store since early last summer. I'll buy an 8 lb. jug if I see one.

I've had great luck with IMR4064 in several cartridges where Varget works well. I'd say , like was previously stated, back the loads down and work back up. I bet you wind up real close to your Varget load if you have room for the bulkier 4064.--Mike Ezell

been using it for a while in all my 308 loads for the M!1A NM, now in bolt guns too, also in my 260 123 smk loads, works as good as Varget, doesn't meter as well in the charge master though.

Yes, that's the only knock I have with it...it doesn't meter well...but more often than not, I've found it to be even better than Varget on paper.--Mike Ezell

Thank you to all for your input; I appreciate it!

I welcome any additional information.

Kinda off tropic. IMR 4064 meters better if fill the chargemaster only 1/4 - 1/2 full. It seems to throw less over charges.

I agree with Mike.

Personally I like 4064 much better than Varget. That being said, due to the bridging and not metering well, I've learned to WEIGH EVERY CHARGE. ;) A PIA, but well worth the time spent when you see the groups. :D WD

++1.....many new loaders overlook this powder and thats fine with me....just keeps it on the shelves for us. IMR 4064 gives me better groups than Varget.

Accurate 4064 & 4350 are easy to ignite too - I've had good luck using Wolf primers in my 260 Rem or 9.3x62 in cold weather.

A suggestion about powder throwers: my Hornady LnL powder tube has a huge port while my Redding trickler has a small port. I use a long straw w/small notch in end and run it to the back of the LnL which produces a smaller stream and easier to control. It does take a little bit longer but reduces clumping & over-charges.
