Improved Performance Stock Modification

Lapua40X

I recently purchase a Choate Ultimate Sniper Rifle Stock and I like it very much. As one might expect, there were a few things I had to do to make it "just right" but none of that was very complicated.
The cheekpiece on the rifle is held in place by a phillips head wood screw and because I need to remove it to properly clean the rifle (it interferes a bit with the cleaning rod path) I was bothered with the possibility of repeated removal and replacement of the screw weaking its hold on the stock material over time.
I picked up a threaded sleeve and allen head screw at my local hardware store, selected the best position for positioning the cheekpiece, and went to work. Took about ten minutes to drill out the screw hole in the stock and install the threaded sleeve, relieve the screw hold in the cheekpiece to accept the new (slightly larger diameter) mounting screw, and put it all together.
Here's how I did the job; maybe of interest to some.

How do you screw the insert in?

The insert has threads cut into its outer surface. Those threads work very much like a wood screw to hold the insert in place. The insert I used had a allen head feature (larger than the threaded hole for the mounting screw)in the top so that I could use an allen wrench to turn it into the stock. Had to be very careful to select the correct size drill to allow for the depth of the threads on the insert but didn't have any trouble. For my installation I left the top of the insert stand proud of the stock's comb so that I could grind it down to bring the interior threads closer to the surface and provide for easier alignment of the mounting screw when I put the cheekpiece on the stock.

We use threaded inserts right much in building trad bows and furniture. Some are "off the shelf"... others we turn in the machine shop.

They work great,as you noted..... pay careful attention to your drill size.We almost always tap the product vs running them in blind. But each wood species.... and then even how "grainy" the particular pce is,will define the diameter for the pilot hole. Take the time,if possible to practice on scrap.

And for hollow stocks.... googlefoo up a Pim. Leastwise that's what we call them. It's a threaded insert for sheet metal. And apologize for any hillbilly vernacular.
