I'm new at hunting

I'm new to hunting and I want to try turkey hunting. What sort of scopes should I look at? Is there anything good specifically? What brand should I be going with? Any advice is great

scopes are a nice touch...but are not completely neccesary...irons sights don't require batteries and work just fine. just my $.02

i'd say save the money on optics and buy a semi-auto if you don't have one already...save yourself from the punishment of heavy turkey loads!

if you do decide to look into sights...bushnell makes some good stuff for a good price point.

hope that helps.

Maybe I should go ahead and get a scope for something heavier? I'll get bored of turkey eventually. But sights for fowl make better sense now that you say it.

I got a friend to check out bushnell with me and I looked at some eotech sights, and Eotech seems like a decent brand. But I wonder how it handles and whether I should look into a hologrpahic sight.

you dont need a scope for turkey hunting, not in the least. It blew my mind when i saw a hunting show where a guy had a 4x scope on a turkey gun i couldnt believe it, then he didnt even hit the turkey.

Second if you can actually successfully hunt turkeys you will never get bored with them, you may get bored of calling and walking around tick and mosquito infested areas but you will never get bored of successfully hunting turkeys. They are smarter than anyone would think and they have eyes like an eagle. Weary turkeys can make bowhunting deer seem easy.

Spend that money on a couple different boxes of good ammo and practice/ pattern your gun, you will understand why shotguns arent meant for scopes. Get a full choke that fits your gun and find a brand of ammo that can perform to 40 yards. There is no need for these new rediculous fancy aftermarket chokes that cost $100 most of them dont make a difference.

Fancy choke tubes and "turkey scopes" are meant to sell to newbies. Just my $.02 ;)

Cool, thank you for the advice guys! See, I probably would have fallen for that.
So the holographic sights I looked into are entirely unnecessary for turkeys? I mean I can see myself trying other game at some point too you know. But I will definately search for proper ammo, thank you.

I do all my Turkey hunting in the local supermarket. No scope needed. I'd look for the Butterball brand. They're delicious. I'm successful each time I go hunting. No need for a license, or any of that camouflage stuff, or squatting down in the bushes with ticks and their pals. No need to be motionless and quiet for hours. Expense is kept to a minimum. Don't have to pluck feathers or dress'em out. I like this method the best.

My turkey gun of choice is a 12 ga muzzleloader with full chokes. Brings new meaning to the term "smoked turkey". Outdoorsman, what size shot do you use in the supermarket????? I would think the manager might get concerned when you start sneaking down the isles looking for the elusive butterball. Tom

If you do go for a scope better take band aides for that ring around the eye. Rifles kick up shotguns come straight back. Why would you want a scope for other game? Geese by the time you see them and get a sight picture thier gone, same with ducks. And it you live in a shotgun state as I do, if not I wouldn't want use a shotgun for Deer. Lou
