I'm confused about Vortex MOA reticle range estimation

Still in research mode, I'm reading through the Vortex users guide for the 5-25-x50 Viper PST Gen II and on pp. 7 of the manual they describe the method for ranging a known 72" dia target. They call out the target as 12 moa , I'm seeing the target as slightly over 4 moa along the windage axis ? Am I doing it wrong ? How are they coming up with 12 moa ? Need clarification. Here's a link to the manual :

Thanks in advance !

They do not mean a 72" diameter target, it means the target is 72" tall (including what looks like the backer

The width of the target looks to be just over 24"

Does that help

Yup they are talking 12 MOA tall. When ranging a target in real life though it's good to do it both ways as how you are facing the target or how the target is hanging can effect the Mil/MOA read.

Also if you plan to range a lot then get a Mildot Master. It's an easy slide rule that works with both MOA and Mils when using the right side slide section. The right side says bullet drop but disregard that and use it as your main area for data and then read the yardage on the left.

Try it here http://www.mildot.com/testdrive.htm and line the 72" mark with the 12 MOA.

Oh, ok now that makes sense. I thought the target gray area was some sort highlighted viewing reference in the manual, not the actual target carrier.
