I'm a Serious Coyote Hunter... w/ Rig...Pics

This is how serious I am about shooting long range coyotes. I designed this 1996 Geo Tracker to help me move slowly around open country hunting coyotes for spot and stalk shooting opportunities. Some of the open country I've been in was way way too large to walk by foot, or try to hide a vehicle and still walk in and out.... and... have to endure all types of bad weather. Hopefully this will be my answer. I haven't tried it yet...but I will in a couple of weeks. I fold down it's camo suit for regular weather... but in snow...I'll fold down it's snow camo suit. I plan on driving it 1-3 mph across open land, while sitting on a swivel chair, and glassing out through the porthole that I cut out in the roof. From there I can shoot from the roof top, which is super stable in every way. I even have push rod levers that work the clutch, brake, gas, and even a steering wheel extension. That way I can do it all from the porthole position. I don't want the coyotes in my lap... I want them past 400 yds. I want to call them very little... maybe just enough for them to expose themselves for some long shots. I should be able to stay mobile and cover more land with less leg work... and stay warmer in bad weather... and... the Geo will haul their dead butts back to the mother ship.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention ... so we'll see if she loves me or not...LOL.

The camo and snow suits are tucked up under the gray tarp. They simply fold down when going into action. All these controls can quickly be removed for driving it normally... and of course the hub caps will be removed. I'll be pulling it behind my van... while also living in the van... and hunting from the Geo Monster.

Some might say this is ridiculous, but how would a person know unless he tries it out... and I should be the first to know. I think it was Einstein that said something like...

The 1000 ways that it didn't work were not mistakes... just proof of a 1000 ways that it couldn't be done.

Do you use your hands or feet for the clutch/brake/gas extensions?

Will the yotes not get suspicious seeing something move "slowly" across the wide open spaces?

Daniel;
It looks like it would be a lot of fun to me....

I'm agreeing with this guy!! Them coyotes have had their way with our deer , rabbits, game and need to not compete with us. Or we fight back! Lol Would you prefer poison guys? If it's legal then give them hell buddy, kill one for me. In today's world we don't keep them down like we used to, we just work and pay taxes.

Last year I was in the Nebraska , South Dakota area and that land was so wide open and big, that it was a job trying to walk through it all... it was just too much... and the weather could grab you by the short hairs. So I had to come up with something that would allow me to cover ground... stay out of the weather... while being ready to glass and shoot.

I'll be doing a lot of glassing, if I see something, then I can push the clutch rod in... range it... and shoot. When it's in 4x4 low drive, it really crawls along... just gotta to steer a little bit. They may see something moving slightly, but I hope to see them before they see me. If they do see me, then I'll just stop and wait them out unless i can get a long shot. I killed a dozen or so last year just walking around, so I hope to get my share this year if I can get on some ranches. These push rods slide back and forth... and have nails in their ends that go into the pedals. The throttle is a twist rod action.

I will also be wearing a sandstone gillie suit that will blend in my head, shoulders, and arms that will be protruding out the top... and a match gun wrap as well. If they see me... it surely won't be enough to spook them out of rifle range. I also have the cloth pulled and tied back away from the wheels a lot better than that first picture shows. That picture was before the trimming was done.

You could use a buffalo hide and horns on the front:) Love it, hope it works good. A friend of mine and I were going to make a paddle boat out of a Ford fiesta but we never got it done. That would have been a wackomobile for sure.

Shooting off the roof top will be light years better than what I had to do last year because it was difficult sometimes trying to get a good prone shot through the tall grass.

Interesting concept and I wish you the best of luck. I would look out for a couple things: make sure exhaust can't be trapped where you spend time and maybe cut some holes for airflow to the radiator.

Have fun!

I was wondering how long it would take for that comment to come up...LOL.

It's legal on private land

Besides... is it really shooting from a vehicle... or a mobile blind.
As you said it's legal where you live on private land but most states its NOT legal shooting from a vehicle anywhere while it's ENGINE IS RUNNING. That's more of the issue. Pretty cool set up. Hopefully it works well. Coyotes are pretty masterful. That vehicle although small and camouflaged is still an object that is not natural in a coyotes environment so will be interesting to see how it works out. Best part is you'll be looking for very long shot opportunities so they do have that as their comfort zone.

Can't wait to hear the stories coming up. Have you taken this out for spin yet? You may need a remote kill switch to keep the motor from shaking your shot.

In some states it's illegal to shoot from your truck.

Hal

In some states, its illegal to have a loaded gun in contact with anything on wheels. Truck, ATV, trailer, bicycle, even a friggin' wheelbarrow!

Interesting project, no doubt. Looks like you've enjoyed the design/building aspect of the project as much, or more, than actually using it? Sure ain't making things easy on yourself, though. Couldn't you at least find a beater with an automatic tranny, so ya don't hafta pedal the clutch from the roof?

Surely it's always legal to step out and go prone... which is always an option.

I don't have to really pedal the clutch because there won't be any shifting... only pushing it in for neutral when needing to stop or pause. Pushing the rods by hand is simple and easy... and the rods have screw catches on the underside so that I can let go of the rods and they stay in place until I release them. If it was an automatic, then I'd still have to push in the brake rod. The ends of the push rods are right near my hand's reach as I sit on the swivel stool.... easy pezzy... lemon squeezy.

Daniel,

Regarding your video - I'm not a yote hunter so I'm not speaking from experience. In your "advertisement" you were saying you're not interested in the close ones and that they can take them out. I would imagine ranchers don't have a lot of spare time to hunt yotes but I gather they don't like them too much. So, if you are, in effect, telling them you'd let the close ones go the ranchers may not like that. Just a thought and I might be totally wrong.

I admire your ambition and creativity. I think there is so some potential for some humor as you set off on your adventure. This reminds me of a friend who tinkers with all kinds of set ups, he has given us some good laughs along the way and has also pulled off some impressive feats. Good luck!
