If You Had To Pick One Bullet For Your 6br ??

I got a call from my smith today. My 6mmbr will be done in a few days. It has a Varmint Kreiger 1 in 8 twist 27". I like two bullets. The 87gr V-max and the 105 Bergers. I will be shooting targets, prairie dogs, coyotes, and this fall antelope and maybe a deer with this rifle. I worry about the V-max expanding to fast on bigger game and the VLD's not expanding on small game. I would like to perfect one load and shoot it as far as it has energy to kill. Am I asking too much? Will the VLDs do a good job on PD's and Yotes?

This is my first 6br. Can some of you guys with experience give me some advice?

The 105 Berger VLD's will serve you well on varmints out of your 6mm BR...

the gun will decide what it likes but, I'd start with the berger and then try the 107 SMK

Good to hear. I was concerned the 105 vld's would just fly right through the small varmints. I had looked at the 107 smk's and will try them too.

I found the Bergers will leave they DRT but lack the spatter effect on p-dogs, though they might expand somewhat better on larger critters. I tried both the 105's and the 88 FB Varmint/Match Grade and they both just punch right through without any aerial display.

The Berger 105 VLD won't expand if any on little critters like PD's especially at 6br velocities. The 87gr Vmax will give you much better smack down. The 105Amax are the best of the VLD's for reliable expansion even out to 800+yds. Sure wish someone would make a 90-95 varmint bullet with plastic tip.

Lance, have you taken any deer or antelope with the 105 A max's ? If so what is the max range? Also, how do they group at 800 up compared to 105 bergers?

I agree on the 85 gr Sierra GK's. That is what I use to shoot in this rifle when it was a 6mm 284. They did a very nice job on antelope. I was hoping with the new 6br barrel in 8 twist to use a larger bullet to hold all the energy I could for extended ranges.

No big game just the little critters. I have heard others having good results with them on deer but I can't comment.

105 amax/6br/2850mv, doe, 400 yds, double lunged, golf ball sized exit, went about 20 yds and she struggled to do that, then flop, down and out.

SO, it's fine on deer but beware of close shots, 200 yds, spine/DRT bullet blew in 1-2". Head shot, 40 yds...ugly but DRT, no tracking, same on a coyote about 175, head shot, later a coon, fox, coyote, and bobcat. Been my luckiest deadliest bullet to date!

I would think the Berger would give better penetration.

Plastic tips? I used 2 95 BTs this year, 2 deer down and out, shoot 5/8" at 200 yds in my 10twist Dakota.

That would likely be my bullet of choice for all. 85s are great, but 95-107 carry further, energy etc.

The BTHP 85, or the 87 BTHP are good on varmints and deer.

ANY deer that can be killed w/a 243, can be done in w/a 6BR IMHO.

Do you think the 105's would work well on woodchucks in Pa? I bought some Bergers the other day, and want to load them in my dasher. Its a 1-8 twist. I got rid of my 1-14 twist and may regret it. With a 58 grain bullet HP, it would either blow their heads off, or just show basically no signs of being shot at all. Basically turning their insides to jello. I also plan on loading some lighter bullets in the dasher to see how they will do. I hardly ever shoot more than 300 yards around here. So as long as I can get 2-3 inch groups at that range I am fine...

for out to only 300 yards i think you may be disappointed with the trajectory of the heavier bullets. i know i was in my standard 6br. the 65 and 75 grain v-maxes are hard to beat at 300 for varmints.

dont forgett about 88gr bergers for a good all around bullet!! I have some BIB 108 on order and i think that they will be my bullet of choice in my BR. Custom bullets arent that much more than production bullets if any at all. Dont over look them either! Lee

I still dont understand completely what trajectory has to do with it. Its like this...As long as you have your clicks figured out, whats the difference if you have to go 20 clicks, instead of 10 clicks. I know that shooting a faster bullet can sometimes move a lot more than shooting a heavier bullet, even though the time in flight for the heavier bullet would be more. As long as you dont run out of adjustment in your scope, I feel you should be fine. A friend of mine who can only afford one varmint rig has a Savage .223. I have seen him make kills out to 500 yards using 69 grain bullets. But he knows his gun, and knows his POI at different ranges. I think that is more important.
