If I were to do something stupid....I mean fun...and stupid

I met a bunch of fun people at the FCN in Oct. A cadre of them seemed to hail from the great state of TX and shoot at Bayou Rifle club outside Houston. I'm freezing my *&%^%trigger finger*&^*&^ off this winter and itching to shoot a match in warmer clime. I see a MidRange match on Feb 21st at Bayou. So..

If I were to drive from North Dakota to shoot that match and then drive right back, would you guys have room for me on the line....?:)

I know that you are all likely concentrating on BSWN at the moment, but I'm thinking Feb 21.....
Might even get to swing by Red Castle and help them clean up their range....

We would be GLAD to have you! There "could be" one fly in the ointment though. Our target boards are cardboard and we (the club powers that be) will NOT allow them to be out in the rain. So before you drive or fly down here, CHECK THE WEATHER with a good, reliable source! But if you make it here, and it 'taint rainin' YOU WILL SHOOT!

This is the kind of info I like to know. And I'd be driving. Google says just under 20 hours each way.....Thanks, Benjamin

We will be looking forward to seeing you! You will be welcomed! AND you will have a GREAT time shooting with some of the nicest people who are also some of the best competitors around anywhere!

Last winter we did the same thing. Drove down friday, shot the practice Saturday, match Sunday, drove back sun/mon. We picked a 1000 yard weekend. It was a great time.

Highly recommended.

OK, It's a go. Able to bring another competitor with me, so twice the fun. If someone has info about the match getting cancelled, please let me know....

Will also stop by Red Castle Range in OK, to help them out cleaning up their range for a few hours as we will be passing through...

Wife is agreeable, but cannot quite understand 40+ hours of driving for 60 shots. I'm trying not to think of it that way....yet...

Right now there is very little chance of a rain out.. But JUST IN CASE, keep your eyes out on www.weatherunderground. I think you will be just fine..

Will do. How much rain will cancel the match. Anything above 0? Or a drizzle would still cancel. Leaving 530 am tomorrow, so looks good now, but it is going to be a LONG drive for a cup of coffee.....

I believe Ben would still take you for some kind of shooting. Good luck and have a safe trip. Matt

Drew,
For just one match, why not fly? Sure, you can't take every single piece of gear you might have along at a local match, but flying is really not a big deal. For me at least, I'd much rather just show up and shoot and not have to tack on 2.5 days of driving at each end. Either way, good luck in the match!

Relaxing while driving on the open highway with a buddy in the comfort of your own truck and schedule... Or getting hassled by TSA, standing in line after line with obnoxious people, and then packed into a plane like sardines... I know what I'd choose!

If it is an "on / off" (mostly off) rain, we will finish the match. If it becomes steady, even if light, they will cancel the match. We have cardboard target-boards and when they get wet and then dry off, they buckle! Then we have to re-do them all again. It is very time consuming>>>and I do understand that. But RIGHT NOW it looks like a 100 percent GO! At THIS moment it looks to be overcast. We will have a southeasterly wind, that according to WWW.weatherunderground will be in the 7-9m.p.h. range.. In an almost open field, that REALLY translates to 10+. AND Since it is coming primarily out of the south, there is a near 100 percent chance of VERY switchy winds fishtailing very quickly! It will be a GREAT match! We always go out afterwards for a hamburger and a beer. You are welcome to join in! AND there are 4 of us that have a friendly bet>> whoever wins has their "burger and beer" taken care of for them by the losing parties! So if you have a little bit of a betting man in you, you're welcome to join in that "event" too. If you do that, that would be 6 for the bet>>we may have to increase the prize to 2 winners>>>first and second place! LOL!!! Oh and by the way the burger and beer tastes better when you win!!! Hehehehe...

Drew-
You be da MAN!! You are a life saver buddy! My wife thinks I'm also "crazy" to be driving all over for my shooting or hockey games. I sell it to her as a "weekend" event and she's welcome to come along (rarely does). FAR to HOU...long ways as I used to live there. You have fun and drive safe. I can reference your "road trip" to my wife to prove I'm not crazy nor the only one puttin on the miles!! Eric in DL

Like life, the journey is (at least) half the fun. Plus I don't value time like most people. Thanks, Greg will likely give the 90s a whirl in TX although I am itching to try my "new to me" 308 that has not seen 600 yet... decisions, decisions...Drew

I'm in. Can't speak for my companion, but he's willing to join me on this trip, so that's telling. Drew

Yeah. My wife has been very understanding, but this is definitely pushing it. The stars have aligned so I'm going for it. Trying to concentrate on the opportunity to shoot and be warm vs. the 40+ hours in the car. If there is a next time, I'm going to fly. Garald is joining me. Drew

Thanks. Trying not to think about the possibility of a cancelled match too much. Thanks for the well wishes. Hopefully get to meet more shooters in any event. It has been fun to put name/face to AS-userid.

Happy to help fellow shooters with "well THAT guy was able to do THIS...so I should be able to...."

Put on 10,000 miles (driving) going to matches last summer. This will be a big bite (about 2700 over 4 days).

Wow Drew..... Good for you guys... Your Prius or Garalds truck?

Took Prius to lake for storage. Was going to take Volt if I went solo, but Garald's truck is too nice a ride to turn down. We'll wave at Omaha/Lincoln as we drive by about noon.

Well we're here. Layed eyes on a darkened Bayou range. Hope its the correct place for the early morning start.

Stopped by Red Castle range in Tulsa this morning to help them re-do their target frame. Nice people and nice range. Look forward to shooting there in the future.

Weather looks cooperative. Should be fun.
