Ideal starting .223Rem neck sizing bushing

G'day .223Rem and other gurus

I am about to start reloading for .223Rem and I need some advice on which neck size bushing to start that will provide a moderate/sensible level of tension, nothing extreme. Will likely be using the Berger 70-80.5gn projectiles to start, shot from a Tikka T3x varmint, 1:8 twist in 24" barrel.

I will be using a sinclaire neck sizing/de-capping die with an arbor press and just need to a starting size. I would normally do my own homework, buy and then adjust but pressed for time at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions made

Cheers

Depends on what brass you are going to use and if you will be turning the necks. If you will be using Lapua match brass and not turning the necks, I would suggest a .248 bushing. The neck diameter of your loaded round will be approximately .250.

With my 223, with the necks turned on the Lapua brass i have to where they are completely cleaned up, size is .2485, which is giving approx one and half thou tension on the bullet when it is in the neck.

I think you mean a Wilson die, sold by Sinclair. Agree with justhtn

With turned necks.. (just to where they are cleaned up), i am using a .248 bushing, loaded round is .249 and the neck is .252

Thanks guys
I will be going with .248 and a .245. I’m not planning on using Lapua brass with this rifle as I am planning on keeping costs down, the tighter bushing will likely be appropriate given propensity of lower quality brass to open up At the neck a bit more.

Thanks for all your input and advice
