A week ago three of us departed Arizona for a ranch in Idaho. The plan was to kill as many ground squirrels as possible. Mission Accomplished!
The scenery was majestic and target rich. Despite a little weather, the first day was eight solid hours of shooting. By Wednesday the squirrels were becoming few and far between on the three pivots we had permission to hunt.
All of us shot 17hmr for most of the trip with a little 22lr sprinkled in.
I relied on my Cooper 57M topped with a 4-12X50 Swarovski Z3 for most of the trip. I also had a Ruger 77/17 all weather that hollowed out a lot of squirrels.
Shot distance was between 3-240 yards.
Each of us shot 1500-2000 rounds over the course of the 5 day trip. The grass was a little tall in places
and the little squirrels could easily conceal themselves behind the taller tufts. It didn't matter, the fields were littered with carcasses at the end of each day. The landowners were pleased with our efforts and next years trip is already in the works.
