I bought my first expensive scope last year. Vortex GE. Going up from a 24x I was amazed. I won many club matches due to this scope. But...
2 weeks ago I shot at match at CMP Talladega. Weather was good, no mirage. No matter what I tried, the target was fuzzy. Could not see the scoring rings at all.
This past weekend at CMP, I shot the Talladega 600. Both days were the same as previous weekend. Couldn't see squat.
After the match, the guy I was squadded with said to try his scope.
HOLY CRAP! I could see everything 100% sharp & clear. It's a March Magenta 80x. I took it to 80x and it was still perfect.
So now I know what a REAL scope will do. I lost many points due to the Vortex. I think it's totally dependant on the weather conditions. Sometimes the Vortex is great, sometimes it isn't. Only issue now is the money for a March. 4K +.
Just because you spent a lot of money on a Vortex
Does not mean the glass is equal to an expensive scope.
I kind of
don't like Vortex, they seem to live by their warranty. their glass is ...meh useable
Some are "OK" but are not on par with Euro Schott Glass from what I've seen
Japan Top Tier glass is almost on par with Schott, such as Nightforces
March uses that Top Tier Japanese glass

Good you are finding these things out for your next "Quality" Scope purchase
Forget the price - jut get "The Best"
Sometimes the best does not mean the most expensive
Some scope makers charge a lot, and we think we got the best because we used
"our hard earned money"
just because we may work harder for our money than others, does not equate to
--- the things we buy have more value because of it.
Keep in mind one of the reasons scopes , Good scopes,Quality scopes, THE BEST Scopes
is in the glass mostly - and that glass has varying qualities of clarity, etc just like people who deal in Diamonds
The better the quality of Diamond, the more it will naturally cost
Same with scope glass- the better the glass, the higher the scope price will be
$1k can mean a whole lot of difference in a scope say as going from $2k to $3k
and that extra grand spent, is not regrettable once you use that better quality of scope.
Because it only had to be spent once.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the March 80x, thats some serious coin for a scope
but, obviously worth it for its glass quality
There are quite a few different aspects of picking out the best scope
Clarity, Contrast, Chromatic Ebberation, the expensive rare earth element coatings used,
Multi Coated vs simply "coated"
So many things to be informed about that simply spending say $2k alone does not do anything if it doesnt have all the features of a top quality scope
---
then there is construction to consider
Brass parts which wear faster vs hardened steel on steel parts
6061 vs 7075 tube

The first time I decided to plunk down whatever it costs for a "real scope"
I got sticker shock
but when I compared one to like 10 others scopes side by side such as
USO, Nightforce, Steiner, Leupold etc
at long distance, the difference was obvious
So much better sight picture, so much more forgiving eye box, eye relief, so easy to get behind the scope and instantly pick up your target vs having to place your eye the perfect distance away and have to have it perfectly centered.
I had to have the scope that offered the best image, brightness, clarity, quality, edge to edge perfection, the ability to see fine minute details such as individual pine needles on a tree at 900 yards
Just all add up to not thinking about the price of the scope
Every person needs at least one scope like that, and helps for you to be able to judge and compare
all other future scope purchases by
