I thought it was good

Texas Solo

B.S. High Master
I bought my first expensive scope last year. Vortex GE. Going up from a 24x I was amazed. I won many club matches due to this scope. But...

2 weeks ago I shot at match at CMP Talladega. Weather was good, no mirage. No matter what I tried, the target was fuzzy. Could not see the scoring rings at all.

This past weekend at CMP, I shot the Talladega 600. Both days were the same as previous weekend. Couldn't see squat.

After the match, the guy I was squadded with said to try his scope.
HOLY CRAP! I could see everything 100% sharp & clear. It's a March Magenta 80x. I took it to 80x and it was still perfect.

So now I know what a REAL scope will do. I lost many points due to the Vortex. I think it's totally dependant on the weather conditions. Sometimes the Vortex is great, sometimes it isn't. Only issue now is the money for a March. 4K +.

I have quite a few Gen II and Gen III Razor scopes and prefer them over every other scope I've tried in the same range. Also have a couple of Vortex PST scopes that serve me well and have very good glass.
All that said, the GE is not their finest work. I find the glass subpar for that price scope and there is no zero stop.

Since you shoot with a bunch of guys, ask to look through as many scopes as possible.
You might find one that you like that's not $4000
Some other nice scopes showup in the Market Place used.
NF comp.
Sightron SVSSED
March HM
Trijicon tenmile

@Ranger188 mentions my two favorite bench rest type scopes above.
All my long range BR rifles wear a NF 15-55 Comp. Never had one fail and on those really bad mirage days I can dial back on the power to around 30X and see the 600 or 1000 yard ten-ring.
I also own a Sightron SIII 10-50 and SVSSD 10-50 and both are excellent. The SIII is what I use on my 22LR bench rifle. The brightness and contrast are both excellent and the scope with zero stop is under $1400 MSRP.

The March is a March-X 8-80X56 Majesta. If the price (and weight) is too much, the March-X 10-60X56 HM is more affordable and saves about 8 or 9 ounces and has virtually the same glass as the Majesta.

I had a GE and compared it side by side with a Night Force BR under controlled conditions…
I ended up using the Night Force. However, the decision was not extremely obvious when I realized that above about 40x the GE was not offering any benefits. If I had a GE, I would stay away from the upper end. The magnification comes at the cost of brightness and clarity… resulting in an overall reduction in resolving power… keep it at 40-45x and maybe you will be happy….

Just because you spent a lot of money on a Vortex
Does not mean the glass is equal to an expensive scope.
I kind of don't like Vortex, they seem to live by their warranty. their glass is ...meh useable
Some are "OK" but are not on par with Euro Schott Glass from what I've seen
Japan Top Tier glass is almost on par with Schott, such as Nightforces
March uses that Top Tier Japanese glass
---
Good you are finding these things out for your next "Quality" Scope purchase
Forget the price - jut get "The Best"
Sometimes the best does not mean the most expensive
Some scope makers charge a lot, and we think we got the best because we used
"our hard earned money"
just because we may work harder for our money than others, does not equate to
--- the things we buy have more value because of it.
Keep in mind one of the reasons scopes , Good scopes,Quality scopes, THE BEST Scopes
is in the glass mostly - and that glass has varying qualities of clarity, etc just like people who deal in Diamonds
The better the quality of Diamond, the more it will naturally cost
Same with scope glass- the better the glass, the higher the scope price will be
$1k can mean a whole lot of difference in a scope say as going from $2k to $3k
and that extra grand spent, is not regrettable once you use that better quality of scope.
Because it only had to be spent once.
---
Thanks for sharing your experience with the March 80x, thats some serious coin for a scope
but, obviously worth it for its glass quality
There are quite a few different aspects of picking out the best scope
Clarity, Contrast, Chromatic Ebberation, the expensive rare earth element coatings used,
Multi Coated vs simply "coated"
So many things to be informed about that simply spending say $2k alone does not do anything if it doesnt have all the features of a top quality scope
---
then there is construction to consider
Brass parts which wear faster vs hardened steel on steel parts
6061 vs 7075 tube
---
The first time I decided to plunk down whatever it costs for a "real scope"
I got sticker shock
but when I compared one to like 10 others scopes side by side such as
USO, Nightforce, Steiner, Leupold etc
at long distance, the difference was obvious
So much better sight picture, so much more forgiving eye box, eye relief, so easy to get behind the scope and instantly pick up your target vs having to place your eye the perfect distance away and have to have it perfectly centered.
I had to have the scope that offered the best image, brightness, clarity, quality, edge to edge perfection, the ability to see fine minute details such as individual pine needles on a tree at 900 yards
Just all add up to not thinking about the price of the scope
Every person needs at least one scope like that, and helps for you to be able to judge and compare
all other future scope purchases by

Interesting read.
Waiting on a bolt gun, action & barrel. Have bought the chassis & trigger. This is the one & only custom rifle, I have owned, will also probably the last. With that being said I am now in a quandary regarding optics. Shooting ELR type ranges out past a mile Wanting to try further.. Have narrowed it down to Nightforce, 7 x 35- 56 Atacr or Vortex Gen 3 6X35-56. Have followed another thread advising as to scope referral., and or preferences.

Can not do the March optics. ELR guys I have questioned all say Nightforce. Mostly due to recoil. Scopes just handle it better. My new rifle will be extremely light regarding recoil. Needing lots of elevation. Vortex has more than Nightforce.. May have to add prism later.

Have Vortex spotter with MOA reticle.. Thinking about staying with MOA.. Most guys using mill.
Any thoughts, suggestions, or advise appreciated. Please state as to why you prefer one over the other.
Does the Nightforce have added value $$$ wise over the Vortex.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys you posted while I was attempting to type. More thoughts please.
What discipline are you using for? That can steer you in certain directions.

I shoot F Open and have used NF BR, NF NSX, NF Comp, Kahles 1050 and the Vortex GE. And have been behind the March 10-60HM and quite a few Majesta's.

I currently shoot the Kahles 1050 and NF Comp's.

The Vortex in my opinion is by far the dog of the bunch. I only use it as a spare scope. The glass just isn't impressive at all.

NF Comp's have awesome glass but I have had one of 3 go down on me. They did fix it.

The Kahles 1050 is an interesting scope and handles mirage very well but I don't care for the parallax adjustment, but it's not a deal killer. It's a great scope and has my favorite reticle for F Class. It's slightly darker than the NF Comp.

March 10-60HM's are beautiful glass. I think I could own one and be quite happy. They seem slightly dark at times but always very crisp.

I keep wanting to fall in love all the Majesta's I've been behind but never do. Don't get me wrong it's a very nice piece of glass but for just shy of $5000 I want more than it gives. The glass doesn't seem to be any better than the NF or Kahles to my eyes. The large field of view is an advantage but I just haven't been blown away by it overall.

I have friend with a Schmidt and Bender F Class scope with a 50 or 60x top end. It's slightly older and I don't know the model BUT that scope has spectacular glass!! Best I've ever seen. But I think retail on a comparable current model was $5K-$6K retail before the tariffs happened..

I can’t speak for the Vortex but…….Was in the same boat as you. I chose the NF ATACR. Great scope for the money. If you watch places like Sport Optics or Eurooptics you can get a demo or open box scope for a bit less.

What else did you look at
How long ago.?
Thanks
So…… back story.
I started with Nikon Monarch 3 scopes. I feel that were very under rated. Got a new match .308 AR and wanted to up grade so I got a Zeiss Conquest. Was not that impressed with the Zeiss, the Nikon was just as good glass wise at least to my eyes.
At that time the elevation direction on the Zeiss was opposite the Nikon. Dialed my self right off the target during a match, sighter stage so I realized what I did and got back on target. I was having none of that so the Zeiss had to go.
At that time the NF NXS was all the rage so I got one. Really liked it and ended up getting two more.
Fast forward to around now. Built a bolt gun on a KRG chassis, probably my last rifle. Decided I should get a good scope, did not want to spend the money on a ATACR so… Looked through a Luppy and a Vortex and then a NF SHV. That was enough to convince me that I was buying the ATACR. I’d figure out what to tell my wife after I got the scope.
We are still married! The scope comparison was about a year and a half ago.

Thank you Sir.!

Thank you Sir.!
Which Vortex did you look at?
Wife was seated next to me several months ago ,when primary care doc said " find something else to do, or you won't be around to do anything. " Told her several years back, when I had the upper built for my gas gun. Would probably be my last. This bolt gun will be my last.
Thank you
