I think Zeiss have been scamming us!

Well I have had a Zeiss Conquest MC 6.5-20 for about 5 yrs now and its been my benchmark scope to compare all other against. When you put the rifle to your shoulder the scope jumps out at you , bright big picture sharp.

So when I planned to buy another 6-20 to put on my new 22BR I couldnt decide between a Sightron SIII or the newer Zeiss HD5 5-25. I finally managed to get an SIII to compare with my older Zeiss MC and there was no comparison. The Zeiss was much brighter. So I bought an HD5 5-25 with the Z Varmint reticle.

Man am I disappointed with it. The optics just arn't close to my older MC yet everything I have read say they have better glass in them that the older MC's.

Its not a bright, I cant resole as much detail, its got a smaller field of fire at some power! and that stupid return to zero is useless as your limited to one revolution.

So I'm now looking for a second hand MC and will onsell the HD ASAP

I do smokeless Muzzleloaders that generate a lot of recoil, I got some of the first 5x25s out there and they all failed, every single one. I know of about 8 that failed so I gave up on Zeiss, I still have a couple of older 4.5x14 conquests that are going strong but who knows when they will puke?

Just purchased a new HD-5 3-15 x 42. The resolution & clarity seem about on par with my original conquests...definitely no better. Field of view is a little disappointing as the OP mentioned.

Wow, I was looking forward to getting one of the new Zeiss scopes for a project...

Now I will definitely have to look at them before I decide, I too have a few of the older Zeiss varmint hunter 6.5-20 power scopes and like them very much, sorry for your outcome.....

Phil.

I feel the same way. I purchased a hd5 3-15 and was disappointed with its brightness, it was no where close to the old conquests. I would be hard pressed to buy another at the price they are asking for them.

Yeah, not very impressive for the money. Sold one of my hd5 5-25 scopes cuz it wasn't that great. My old Japanese Tasco scopes have much better glass than that hd5. I have another hd5 5-25 that's much brighter and clearer than the one I sold. Inconsistent glass for sure.

Hmm... the plot thickens. apparently the older conquest MC were made by Meopta, and if you look at the new Meopta MeoPro HTR its obviously the old Conquest MC under the Meopta name!

I sure wish they offered the varmint hunters reticle.........:(

Not surprising because Meopta is made in the Czech Republic which borders Germany and Austria.

My binos and spotting scope are both Meopta Meostar HD models. It really is some of the best glass out there...and the conquest MC scopes would have had the old non-HD Meopta glass.

Meopta must like making optics for other companies. They make the Instinct Euro HD spotting scopes for Cabelas as well as NightForce's top of the line spotting scope.

I tested several of my scopes at dusk a couple days ago & the HD5 really shined in low light. A couple of Leupolds & conquest MC''s that were as good or better in resolution & clarity in the open sunlight quickly faded next to the HD5.
It is rather persnickety about parallex vs focus & for most distances past 150 yards I'm at or near the infinity setting.
I got the scope (with rebate) for $519.00 & it is worth every penny. However, I wouldn't pay the $1200.00 retail IMHO....
