I shot my nut off!!

The one that holds this 20" clanger onto the mainframe plate!

There's 12 shots on the white plate....put there by my new Beanland 30/06 and at least 6 pretty much to center; such that after a wind correction toward 9 o/clock...the 1 3/4" nut was 'done'!! Fired this afternoon off of the bipod from 1000 yards. Got it figured out though as how to solve this problem. Gonna get me a 5" diameter circular piece of AR400 1/2" thickness from Sharplin Dozer and weld it to the new bolt I'll have to get tomorrow.

Am I having a ball?? You dang right....and don't have to leave home to have it!! ;D ;D

I've done the same thing but it involved a LOT of alcohol and no guns ;D ;D Dang it someone had to say it :P

On a serious note, one thing I have learned is A500 (I know you said 400) loses its hardness after being welded (heated I guess)...it dents and gets dinged up pretty bad. Not sure about 400 but something to think about.

Yep! I'll have the pros at the dozer shop weld it! They do this day in day out without ill effect!

Don't know the grade! Standard nut from the Ag Supply House! Now I got to get some guys to help me take those plates off! They're HEAVY!! :-[ :-\

Try a grade 8 nut and bolt. I hit one a while back and it didn't look good, but stayed in place. Not sure how easy it will be to remove, but it was still on there. I know another member on here has set up targets and fastened them with grade 8's with good results.

Is it possible to reverse the setup so that the bolt head is on the front and the nut is on the back?

With the nut on the front....I can change and or repair a plate as needed without having to remove the large 44" diameter plate which I use as the aiming bull using aperture sights for Creedmoor shooting with my Sharps; they're all HEEAAAVVVYYY! With the nut frontwards....pretty easy to change. The only time I have to repair (weld up a punched hole) on the large black plate is when one of my grandchildren lets a round get off the AR400 plate...which is seldom. They don't shoot these Sharps as yet....only their 6.5 MM rounds. My Sharps lead bullets just splatter on the mild steel whereas the jacketed stuff will punch through! ;D
