ducks-and-bucks

Im a newbie to BR....

I have to buy a scope for my 6BR im building...

I kno how first focal plane works, and I know how second works...

With my long range shooting I do I only use first focal plane.... but with benchrest I read many use second focal plane...

I have no experiance with BR scopes though. I know the high power scopes are used but they all seem to be second focal plane... I understand 1/8 click values are common....

My question is when trying to be so precise why does everyone go with these second focal plane scopes when the POA is different when you change power settings?

Teach me something here please!

If you are shooting known distance, you want second focal plane.

From there, it depends what game you are shooting. Weight is a huge factor in short range light varmint.

If the scope is even a variable, we're not going to be changing the magnification after we get dialed in. No need.

The crosshairs are too thick on a FFP...that is the main reason most of us use SFP. The 1/8 clicks are dang nice when you shoot further distance...they are nice close but not as important at 100y.

Just buy the NF Benchrest 12-42 and be done with it. ;)

If you have the bucks, NF is definitely the way to go. If not, I have 3 older Burris Signature 8-32x44's with the peep plex reticles that I feel are awesome for the price out to 600 yards. JMHO

Not sure why you want a variable. I shoot 100/200 yard bench rest and the 45X Leupold is tough to beat. It is very popular. I don't have any experience in long range bench rest, but I do have a 12-42 Nightforce also, and I would shoot that about anywhere. It is heavy, however.

I really like my Sightron SIII 10-50x. Clear, bright, good eye relief, reasonably priced at about the same price or less than a Leupold, right about $900 delivered IIRC.

If you want a variable, get the NF 12-42 BR and never look back.

Nobody really "lives" in South Texas! ;D

Just kidding, I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could pry my significant other away from our Grandchildren! The NE winters are no longer friendly to my Arthritic joints!

How is the eye relief with the 45 power scopes and the like? With the original posters question, who's scope at or above 36 power has good eye relief? My 36 leupold is fussy as well as 2 of my sightron 36's.

$900 delivered, can I know where?

Mr Majestic, I also live in South Texas. An awfully lot of folks just come down for 3 or 4 months and stay in a camper. We call them winter Texans .

ray,

It was from bigsupplyshop.com and was right at $900 or $925 delivered and insured.

Dennis

edit: Just checked and it's $851 plus shipping, but they're out of stock on all three models!

The 10-50 Sightron weighs 34 oz with rings and a Leupold 45 x comp weighs 23 oz with rings,,,,I dont know what kind of "B"enchrest rifle you are building ,,,but that xtra 11 oz is hard to put up with ,,,esp in a Sporter/Light Varmint which must weigh less than 10 1/2 pounds !!,,,,if you are building a 17 lb Light Gun for long range then your prolly OK,,,,,Roger

Funny... we have Texans up here in Colorado for 8 or 9 months a year. We just call them Texans! ;)

P.A. calls them Flat landers!

All those things are better than what my Wife calls me! As long as it is warm and my joints don't ache you can call me anything, but late for supper! I did Basic and Tech School in Texas and loved it! Very large percentage of beautiful Blondes down there! Gotta go my Wife is coming....... ;D

I never looked through or actually even seen one in person, but I have read a lot of good things about the Weaver fixed power rifle scopes. I believe they come in 36 power? Am I correct? Anybody have one? If so, is it a good scope?

The Weaver T-36 is a great value. I shot one for years. Not as bright as a Leupold LCS or NF BR. I keep one to put on my hunting rifles during load development and for a backup.
