I need a stock

I am having a 22-250 built. I ordered a 28 inch heavy Krieger barrel for the build. I bought a 700 Remington, with the HS Precision Varmint Stock) for the build. I was planning on using the Left Handed HS stock for the build. The smith I was using measured the barrel and said it would fit in the stock. Now it turns out the barrel is too large for the stock. So I need a new stock, this is not the fault of the cu rent smith doing the work). Does any one have any recommendations on a stock I could use for a LH Short action 700 Remington action with a heavy Krieger barrel?? I would really like to find a thumbhole stock?? Thanks, Tom.

I don't know of any thumbhole stocks that will take a true bull barrel, I took the time to open the HS stock for my 1.250 Krieger.

Check out Boyds Varminter thumbhole stock, it should work OK up to a 1.250 barrel.
Or have a custom maker build you one .....

It takes a some elbow grease and some time but I've opened up a couple of the syn VS stocks to take a LV and HV taper barrels. The last one the barrel was around .915 @ 24. I carefully used a 1.125" wooden dowel and a 30mm scope lapping bar in conjunction with 180 to 600 grit papers.

My gunsmith said that he would have to take out too much material to make the barrel fit. He said there would be less than .010 of material left at the end of the stock. And he said the finish on the stock is more than .010 thick. Tom.

Varmints For Fun

Check on McMillan if a synthetic stock will work for you - I replaced the HS stock on my Remington with a McMillan M40A1-3, and have been very pleased with it. Lots of room for a heavy contour barrel.

If you prefer a laminate - Joel Russo builds terrific stocks in a variety of target/varmint patterns.

Dad has a laminated Boyds thumbhole stock on his .22-250 Rem 700 varmint rifle. It looks and works great. Lots of choices out there for heavy barreled Remingtons.

Snake Eye I went to the site, but I did not see anything about a LH stock. Did I miss it?? Tom.

Tom,
There are several stocks he has that can be used for left hand shooters. If it doesn't have a cheek piece it can be used. I the stock has a palm swell, it can be sanded off too. Contact Greg for more info.

Model 8 stock example.

We ordered a new stock today from Manners Stock company. It is an ambi. thumbhole style stock. the model ia a GAT. I hope it works out. If anybody is interested in the old Remington stock the gunsmith is going to keep it. His name is RHYS, his shop is in Wyoming. You can find his information on the VHA web site. Tom.

Your gunsmith is nuts or lazy, I have three 700's all on HS Precision stocks, set up to use up to 1.250 dia bull barrels they're fully free floated, I always have the aluminum bedding block and recoil lug area skim bedded. They still have more then adequate material left.
