I need a comfortable sling

OK, I am old, fat and unhealthy. my only form of exercise is what I call "woods loafing", that is where I walk in the woods carrying a long gun. my main purpose for exercise but I always want my hunting gun with me in case I see a critter (happens a lot).
I normally balance over my shoulder, but I am going to start using a sling, so I need help, should I get wide? narrow? stretchy? foam? specific brand? please give me your insight.

thanks for the help!

I am going to follow this as i dont know squat abt them.
In my current state of topical ignorance, the idea of cross body, muzzle down SEEMS to have merit for the woods stroll.
Breathlessy awaiting knowledgeable, experienced replies.

For comfort, I like the Uncle Mike's elastic type. I'm old too but in fairly good shape. However carrying a heavy varmint rifle in the field is a challenge for me now. This sling has give to it and makes it less painful but it does slip around so I have to re-position sometimes depending how far I walk. But these days, I don't usually go more than 200 yards with the heavy varmint rifle. If I plan to walk a lot I take one of my light weight compact rifles, i.e. Rem Model 7.

For non-slip, the Rubber Claw type works great for me. The rifle won't slip off your shoulder but on a heavy rifle it digs into your shoulder if you're hunting with light clothing. For winter hunting while wearing a heavy coat, it's ideal.

I never found a totally comfortable sling but I'm going to check out rayporter's recommendation in his post.

My absolute favorite hunting sling is the standard Vero Velini SP?. Extremely comfortable neoprene with a non-slip underside that stretches just a bit. Great slings and if you order off their website the prices are pretty reasonable.

I like my rifle slung in front of me, it’s a bit quicker than the shoulder slings. Magpul makes a few different versions that are comfortable.

The sling type which is suitable depends a lot on how you plan to carry the rifle. Besides comfort and stability, another primary factor for me is quick deployment from carry to shooting position. I like to carry muzzle down with rifle behind the body for these purposes. This way nearly any sling with a nonslip comfort pad near the butt, which ends up over the shoulder, works fine. I also made one weaving paracord ala YouTube which is pretty cool.

I use a claw most of the time, in the winter dragging out coyote, I loosen it and go across the back. This can be tight on the chest with my drag rope across the chest making an "x". Thinking about the "ultimate sling" which can be used biathlon style(less chest pressure) or over the shoulder.

these are solid especially if you carry a pack, they can clip in.....or should i say magazine in since they seem to be interchangeable words ??? lol.

or a horse,?

Slings aren't just for carrying a rifle... get one that can help you make that next shot too. I know most of the folks here shoot either benchrest or F-Class, but even a basic GI web sling can be rigged so that you can use it in a hasty sling configuration and make that next offhand shot at a critter far less unsteady.

I have tried them all...bought absolutely every sling I have seen that was different in any way looking for the dream sling. Got pretty close with the Limbsaver Kodiak. I don't like that it doesn't have quick detach swivels. It has those ones with the long screw you have to sit there and screw drive into place. But, other than that it's not a bad sling. Comfortable, does not slip and has a nice hand hold spot. Definitely suggest you take a look at one of these.
Used Vero Vellini previously. They are nice and they stretch some and absorb a little shock from the weight of the gun on your shoulder when walking. But, they are neoprene and bounce a little and that lets it slip some. I used the wide one that spreads the weight over a wider area on your shoulder so you don't feel it so much.
Third choice is a Browning one that is actually a double harness type but the one side can velcro onto the middle of the main one so you can wear it like a backpack or conventional. Not a bad option if you know you are carrying a heavy gun a long time or ways.

I have one of these (made for a shotgun) on my 18 pound 220 Swift. It makes walking with it very tolerable. Doesn't make it lighter though!

Everyone I’ve let use one of the Vero Vellini slings I have on my rifles (loaners at times) has asked where I got them and wants at least 2-3. I just use the plain narrow ones and prefer them to the wide. I don’t carry many heavy rifles though, 6.5-8 lbs.

If you want a comfortable sling for carrying a rifle without the need for fast aquasition if needed, the dual back pack style are without a doubt the most comfortable. You won't hardly know you have it on. I use one for my heavy guns. Kind necessary if hauling a 15-18lb rifle any distance. I think it may be a Vellini model.

Really depends to me on what rifle I’m going to have with me. For my hunting rifle, to me, it’s hazard to beat a LimbSaver kodiak for comfort. For Varmint hunting, I like a Viking Tactical or a Vickers Blue sling (and there are several others of this style of sling). Like one person has said, you may try a whole bunch before you find that one “Perfect Sling” for your style of hunting. Best of luck..... Lots of great answers already.
