I love those 17's. BUT hate cleaning

Pull my finger
I have 2 17's. An HMR and a Hornet. I love shooting both. BUT I hate cleaning them. Seems that it is so hard to keep a patch on the jag, and most of the time when you put the patch in the chamber the patch either falls off or the jag pierces it and it gets stuck before it even goes anywhere.. Not only that but I have 3 rods and all take a different thread..

Please impart some sanity to my 70 year old brain.

I am off to the store to look at the offerings

Which type jag are you using? I use the kind with the sharp tip and spear the patch just off center. Run it through my bore guide and down the bore. Couldn't be easier.

Rod: Pro Shot with 5-40 thread
Jag: I use the Pro Shot jag that came with the rod, Tipton plated will not work, too tight with the patch I use
Patch: I use the Brownells #1 Round 7/8" 17-22 cal cotton cleaning patches (084-268-001WB)

Getting the right diameter cleaning patch that works with your jag, and absorbs Bore Tech Cu remover is a trick. But it works for me.

I use a Gunslick 1piece CF cleaning rod, Gunslick .17 cal jag, and Montana X-Treme .17 cal 3/4 square cleaning patches.

My 17 HMR also seems to shoot better a little dirty versus clean but past a certain round count and it'll let me know I need to clean it.

With those skinny littel .17 cal cleaning rods a bore guide sure makes getting those first couple patches through a lot easier because they bow so much when you push hard on them.

I start with Wipe Out, but then after a soak I patch it out and use a few other things.. It's not the fluid but the damn small patches. I do have a pointy jag, but it is still a PITA.

I got a Dewey rod and jag from Kindler. I cut 22 cal patches in half, corner to corner. i use wipe-out sometimes overnight. Then I dry patch, followed by a Butches and JB patch, short stroked. Then after that, Butches till it is clean. I ran out of wipe out and had to use butches only today. Turned into a two day affair. I like Wipe out.

I have used Dewey rods forever. I cut 22 or 6mm patches in half. The Dewey punch jag seems to work very well as I have no recollection of patches coming off the jag.

I am a firm believer in brushing the 17's with good quality bronze bristle brushes.

I have used many shilen Stainless 17 barrels, 17 Ackley hornet, 17 Mach 4, and 17 Remington.

If you can have someone make you a long rod guide, it really helps limit rod flex.

I hear ya bud. I had a 17 HMR many years ago and although I came up with a good cleaning routine, it was a pain to figure out at first. Today the only small bores I have is various 20 cals (I don't consider my 6mm's small bores)

The secret to cleaning small bores is to cut patches as others suggested. I always keep a good pair of high quality scissors in my cleaning kit for this reason. Cut a few different sizes until you find a size that works best. Then cut a bunch the same size for your inventory. Each 2" pad will make about four 17 or 20 cal pads.

Different style jags will give you a different fit in the bore as well. Tipton makes a really nice 16 piece jag set that I like, but I have many other styles as well (Dewey, Hoppes, Pro Shot, etc). I also have all sorts of different patches, I like Pro Shot patches the best. Can never have too many jags, patches and brushes.
