I know....never look through a borescope, but....

I saw this in the chamber when looking for something else. Admittedly, I am a nu-by when it comes to borescoping.

Rem 700. 1.25 HV taper 30 inch 1-7 twist 6.5 prc. 273 rounds fired. 56.5 H1000 147 eldm @ 3070

Pics are without 90 degree lens.. Couldn't get the picture right with any of the 90 lenses. Doesn't seem right .

Normal?

Should I panic?

Thanks, Tod

To be sure those are cracks clean the chamber and look again. If they are indeed cracks and not scratches it's not a good sign. It could be flaws in the steel. I don't see how this could happen from reaming the chamber so I think the best approach might be to call the barrel manufacturer and talk to them about the cracks. A reputable barrel manufacturer would replace the barrel.

I really can't imagine those being cracks but if so, get it off and send it to the bbl maker. I have no other explanation other than cameras do funny things at times. I'm sure they'd want to see it asap.

I am not expert on anything except for ground hogs.

But seriously, would the old paper clip check reveal if those are indeed cracks? It might be worth a try.

If they are indeed cracks, it's hard to imagine it could happen from just shooting. If they are cracks, I would suspect that they were material defects from the start.

I was a Level III in non-destructive testing. A liquid penetrate test which is relatively inexpensive, would quickly reveal if these are cracks but it may not be possible to use this test method due to the constrained area.

Don't clean with a brass brush as it might lap material over the"flaw".
Some copper cleaners can etch Stainless (a small amount) and aid in inspection.

Maybe I should expand the story. Tube is a Kreiger. "Cracks" are in the chamber. I prepped this gun to shoot the Tac division at VT. I had 100 rounds loaded up but shot 40 of them practicing and shooting steel the weekend before. All was well, the gun shot well and everything chambered fine, but I needed to load the brass up again (FL sized) so I would have 100 to take to VT. Cleaned gun very well and ALSO REPLACED TRIGGER. Off to VT I go and noticed that I could hardly close the bolt on my new loads. Tried chambering the older stuff that had chambered very easily the week before and they were also tough to close the bolt on. Couldn't keep all 5 rounds on paper at 1K. So, I switched to my 6-47L backup gun and finished the weekend. I was looking at my PRC brass on day 2 of the match and saw this. SEE PICTURES BELOW. Something had to be causing this...is was on every fired piece of brass. Dave Holland grabbed his borescope and didn't see anything on the shoulder that would cause this, but it was a very quick look and it didn't matter since I had my backup gun.

Fast forward to today, I scrubbed the bbl, chamber, bolt and action AS USUAL and decided to grab my borescope......FINALLY had a reason to look at a gun with it. I only used it to check inside brass for impending case seperation.

I couldn't find anything in the shoulder to cause this...maybe I got rid of it when I cleaned it. Just happen to find the "cracks" on the way to the shoulder. Also....if I remember right.....there is WAY more carbon on the necks and shoulders of the newly fired brass than there used to be before.

So.....Question

1 Would/could a trigger change cause the hard closing bolt, or was it some kind of obstruction on the shoulder?

I don't think the chambering issues had anything to do with the possible cracks in the chamber.

Anyway, this is where I am at now.
