I Keep Missing the Dime....

Getting ready for the Ridgway VBR shoots, I took my SA284 cat down to
Spartansburg's 500 yard range for some repeatability strings, and a new
powder to test with my 183 SMK's. Reloder 16 and Ramshot Hunter have
given me the best groups overall with the new 30", 8.5 twist Brux barrel.
A buddy of mine (Gary Smith) who shoots the VBR match's had traded me
for my R-15.5 for a couple of lbs. of IMR/Enduron 4451. If I run low on R-16
I'll have this to work with.....Well what do you know ?? After a short velocity
check. I ran them along side my R-16 loads that gave me consistant 1 1/4"
groups at 500 yards. The IMR 4451 load ran 2804 fps. with ES and SD were
in the low single digits. First 4 shot group with zero wind gave me a .640" group.
Follow up four shot group was just under one inch. I think I accidentally found
my Ridgway load.....?? I have 3 more weeks to back this up. I'll note that I had 30
rounds thru the barrel prior to shooting this group. I will fire the next tests before
cleaning, then clean, 3 shot foul, and test again.

Sierra makes imo plain studly 6mm match bullets. The 80 grain .22 pushed fast is very hard to beat with heavies, at 600.

I don’t know why, but I can’t get the same relative results from Sierra 7’s as with those smaller bullets. It sure is a very attractive bullet, though.

Edit. And, so is the 197. I will keep trying as new approaches occur to me.

When I first started the SA284 project 2 years ago, I burned out a Bartlein
testing anything and everything in the 180 class bullets. Nosler's were a
no show from the beginning. Berger's and Sierra's were close enough that
spending extra money on Berger's was not worth it, plus Berger's were hard
to find. I decided to stay with the 183's, and throw powder at it. H4831 and
Reloder 23 were first on the list. Could not get any velocity from them.
Ramshot Hunter was an after thought, and salvation. It gave me speed
and accuracy to 2820, loaded long. Reloder-16 gave me my lower accurate
node at 2780. Again by chance and not by design, IMR/Enduron 4451
hit the sweet spot. The new Brux barrel has about 200 rounds thru it now
so I'm also thinking it sped up a bit, and now have use of a good seasoned
barrel for matches this year.

I can sure relate to your journey with them, so to speak clearing your own pathway through extensive testing. Your results look great. If they are uniform, they certainly have the BC end covered, need no further tipping, and I for one have never lost a Sierra bullet jacket. Red, Blue and even Yellow, yes, Green, no.

Thanks for experimenting and sharing your results as there’s no one simple, pat and accepted recipe for the 183’s, and yours is working well. I’ve been in that excursion boat with various loads myself. (For me that boat would actually be a houseboat, one that I never seem to leave.)

I also really do like the older 180, tipped, for 600. The 197 I just lack a 7 twist to utilize, but slower than that (1:8) does not work at low elevation. I picked up Enduron and IMR branded powder in the worst part of the shortage but haven’t cracked one open yet. Now I’m thinking I will.

That IMR/Enduron 4451 falls in the area of H-4350 and R-16. In this
current load work it may seem a lot more like Reloder 17, with added
temp stability.

On another note.....I have been trying the new Vhitavouri 555. I was one
of the lucky ones to get 8 lbs when it was first released then disappear.
Initially not looking good, I'll save that chase for another time.

Very nice Fuj. Now, crank the knobs. Good luck at your first Ridgeway Match. Remember, only the next shot counts.

In my new 6XC I load RL-16 and IMR4451 exactly the load and get exactly the same results. Could not find any RL-16 for many months now but managed to pick up 4 pounds of IMR4451 so I know I'm good for a while.

Jeff.....I'll save some of those loads for the Deer match, I need an edge
shooting with you !! LOL I'll be down for the UBR match the following
week of the VBR match. Ethan is just starting to work on my ELF barrel for
that. Should be a good year.....
