I have this old gun…..

I’m gonna clean/polish/oil it up, store it away and just cherish it, never sell it obviously, but what is it worth?
Please don't forget to take it out and shoot it now and again.

I have a Winchester 1873, in 38-40, that was passed down to me from my Great Grandfather. Once a year, on his birthday, it gets taken to the ranch range and a box of ammo is run through it.

J.D. I have almost the same gun in 25 auto. I think I still have the box and owners manual. It was my fathers and he just stuck it in my mothers cedar chest, when I got it, it was stuck solid I let it soak for a week in the old Hoppes, got it apart, lubed it up then fired it in the basement. It then became my everyday carry gun for about 15 years. I still carry it once and a while, in my back pocket, no one has a clue it is there.

I had one like that. I bought it from a friend, just after high school for $50. He said it was his father’s. I told him that if he ever wanted it back, let me know as I’ll never sell it. As happens, we drifted apart. 25 years later, I get a phone call out of the blue.”You still got my Dad’s gun?” I said I did. “You remember what you said?” I said I did. We met up and he got his Dad’s pistol back for $50.

That’s honorable. Good for both of you. What do you suppose they’re worth?

I’ve heard that the 1911 was originally designed with an external extractor. The high power did. And that the army wanted it to be more tamper proof, so they made it the internal setup that we all know. This 1903 and the high power, makes me think that might be true. Certainly a better design. Hate 1911 internal extractor in my limited experience of 2.
