I have the remington 700 SA , now what?

Hi guys, this is my first post here. I got the urge to put together a ( starter bench rest gun ) after years of shooting all types of other guns and competitions. Lately It's been big bore cast bullet shooting with Hi wall, rolling block, sharps, etc. What brings me to the bench rest is the fact our private range has a shooting house set at 600 yards, and can go out to 800 yards with a portable bench. I would love to build a 600 yard bolt action rifle. Now....I don't want to invest a ton at this point for a gun that will not see any competition. I do have a new Remington 700 stainless receiver I would use. My thoughts were, 6BR, cut rifled, Mcmillan stock, jewell trigger. So for shooting at 600-800 yards, am I even close to what I need and also what contour barrel will a 700 handle, twist, etc. Keep in mind that this shooting range can get pretty windy at times, so I am leaning towards a somewhat heavy bullet? Please feel free to chime in at this point!!!! Chamber cutters ,FB length and die questions to follow!! Thank you for your time, loco.

Sell it and buy a used LR custom actioned rifle......you'll jump magnitudes in the learning curve for doing so at the same or less cash outlay.

My first thought was sell the action and buy a Savage Model 12 BR in 6BR.
put a scope on it and go play...why waste all the money and time if its not for competitions. this would be the perfect rifle to have fun with.

I would do a 6 Dasher. Easy to get to shoot . A little more velocity than 6BR so it would help in wind and at farther distance. The barrel would be an 8 twist so you can shoot the 105 to 108 class of bullets. I would do a 28 inch barrel with a brake. A 1.250 for 6 inches tapering to about 950 or so. McMillan MBR stock and a sako extractor in the action. Cheap to shoot and good brass. Matt

Despite the trigger being less than stellar, I agree with the above. Keep it simple, unless you really want to build something. In which case, the 6BR is fine (especially if you might want to use factory ammo). As to all of your other questions, they've been answered many, many time. Search this forum. Maybe start with the 6BR forum.

+1....get a nice scope too. I don't think you will find a more accurate factory rifle...and the 6BR will work just fine for you.

great ideas on that build. one more small detail that action needs to be trued on the front receiver ring and the
locking logs lapped in . that should help a lot for accuracy . The smith putting on the barrel will do this but make sure to mention it. 6br or dasher both are really good 8 twist and the 105 to 108 bullets , heavy barrel + brake
26 to 28 inches

Get a #17 HV barrel at 28" long. 1:8" twist and chamber it for a 6BR, 6BRX, or 6Dasher. Get a Brux, Krieger, or Bartlein barrel and go have fun.

Don't fall for the Savage trap. Savage will never offer you the flexibility nor the quality component options that the Remington will offer you. You will have a much higher accuracy potential with a your Remington action and a match barrel from the get go.

Good luck!

Check out benchrest central and here as complete rifles used are pretty reasonable.

Thanks to all for their feedback. I think it just boils down to how much accuracy I expect and how much I'm willing to pay for it. I'll keep looking at all this great info here on the forum and try to make a decision on what to do. Thanks again, loco.

Somebody just has a problem letting the savage thing go,buy what you can afford and enjoy the sport.

Jeff

Another route you could go is, get a rem/age barrel set up from northland shooters supply. It would cost less and you wouldn't have to wait for a gunsmith to do the work. The only wait might be if he doesnt have the barrel in stock.
