I earned a bronze medal this weekend

Well i did it (again) I earned a bronze medal in the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) John Garand match. This match is thee most popular of all the CMP matches, as most any domestic or foreign service rifle is legal for use,and this is only a 30 shot match.
All shots fired at 200 yards on SR1 targets , no bipods, slings and iron sights!
10 shots Slow prone, 10 shots rapid prone (starting from standing, with a magazine change, in 80 seconds) 10 shots offhand.
All thou it was cold (about 61 degrees) overcast and a little rain, this did not keep 10 of us, from competing in this match.
My trusty Rock River Arms National Match AR did not let me down, as I shot a 275-5x , had I not dropped a couple points in the offhand part, I would have earned silver.
The crew at Ft. Wayne Rifle &Revolver do a great job of putting on a match, and have a very nice club to shoot at.

Congrats on getting out and shooting well. Nice writeup.

A couple of points may merit correction.

The John C Garand match is not the whole shebang, it is one particular match shot with, not surprisingly, M1 Garands.

As your medal says you shot the Modern Military match.

There is a SNAFU with Modern Military that it seems happens at most CMP clubs. Your NM AR is not technically legal. The rules say MM ARs must be <8.5 pounds and not have a free float forearm. There is no place within CMP Games events for rifles like yours to shoot officially. Most MDs are not going to send anyone away so they say the hell with it and just let them shoot Modern Military anyway. Some clubs and Camp Perry slide them into an Unlimited Modern Military class of their own. CMP really should add UMM to the rulebook.

Congrats, you did well. Thanks for posting the pics and report. That's me keeping score from my comfy stool.
Jess

If you look closely, JLJ was the smartest guy there, having a plastic bag to keep this score in....it was wet out......we're you scoring for the guy with the 03a4 sniper rifle?

KZIN,

You are correct on several things, yes this not the only match offered by the CMP, my write up is just a brief overview for public consumption.....

And yes technically, kinda my national match is not "legal" I do make the 8.5 pounds, just by ounces, but my hand gaurd is freel floating, no MD on a club level is gonna nix me, but at Perry they might, if they throw a fit, I figure I can bump in to the UMM .....at Perry all I have shot is rimfire sporter, now that I have a couple years of high power at the club level, I will shoot the Garand match at Perry next summer, with the guys from my club.....I don't want to be THAT noob......

don't take it hard,,just do it your way, seems to work well,,

Which one Of the two pictures shows you shooting standing?

Yes, I am the guy in the green coat......the other guynstanding, is a bloke named Phil out of Michigan, shooting a chromed out (complete with white sling) 03a3.....picking up X's like he was at point blank range....

Here ya go guys, me getting ready to shoot pop ups at perry....it was November and a 30 mph head wind coming in off the lake....cold!!

Pop ups are neat.....silhouette targets pop up, from 50 to 350 meters away, and you have 6 seconds to engage and shoot....

Ok, some observations.

You’re tipping your head down and is now at an angle (eyes not level) to the ground. This disturbs your inner ear and your body will not be able to hold you upright with minimal effort. So your position sways. From 9:30 to 4:00. Counteract this by emulating the other guy. Bring the gun up much higher tilt it left if you need to to bring the sights to your eye. BEnd at the lower back to counter the imbalance. Twist to the left slightly from the waist to add some tension in the position. Put the natural point of aim at the left edge of the 10 ring. You’ll find the wobble will tend to drift right as you aim the shot. Be quick on the trigger breaking at the first ten you see.

Your right leg is bent indicating your not evenly distributing the weight. This will exacerbate all of the other problems people generally have with standing. Move if your on uneven ground but you must build a position that evenly distributes the weight onto both feet.

Holy critiques batman ,I never noticed the OP was looking for advice...

Just in case I missed that part...My advice, keep having fun and congrats again.

Aaron.
Hella shooting. Good work. I'm glad you're rolling out of the season as well as you are.
