Hydro Forming

jvw2008

Lose the Second and we lose them all.
Looking for some experienced advice. This will be a new procedure for me and so far the videos on Youtube are still leaving me with questions. Ben at Hornady made me a 284 Shehane hydro die last year that I'm finally getting out to exercise on some new Norma 284 Win brass. I have a call into Ben for some advice but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. Two simple questions:

1) prior to hydro forming should I expand the new necks?
2) should I use a light coat of sizing wax on the necks and shoulders prior to putting cases in the die?

No and No. I do neck turn prior to hydro forming but that probably doesn't matter on the shehane.

I do use imperial sizing wax on the stem of the hydro die to help seal and get better pressure. Have done thousands of dasher brass this way. Make sure you hit straight down so that you do not bend the stem as that is the weak point in the system and if bent will start to stick.

With the Dasher all I do is turn the necks run them into my bushing die with a 260 bushing load them up and shoot them, easier than the false shoulder. And expanse the shoulder better.

OK guys. Thanks for the input. Pardon the pun but I'm going to go have a whack at them.

Don't forget your scuba gear, I wasn't paying attention once and made a hell of a mess. I also recommend squirting some brake cleaner through your forming die after you are done with it to keep it from rusting and removing any water.
